My first (and last) big koi purchase
So with the little one due in September, I probably won't be able to afford to ever spend much on a koi again. (I say probably because its not a commitment I'm willing to 100% make!!!) I spotted this Goshiki a couple of weeks back in koi logic and kept thinking about it since, and yesterday me and the missus met someone locally to the shop to get our pram so she was happy. I took the opportunity to pop in to koi logic and get some more stuff for the medicine cabinet (Fluke M, Chloramine T so its ready if needed) and saw this one hadn't sold yet. I am not sure how personally, because I think it is a brilliant looking fish with all the right markings in the right places, but I also support spurs so can't really be the best judge! Anyway, £500 later at 44cm (It took me a while to make the purchase due to the amount!) this was the result:

Sorry about the sideways picture, its the right way on my computer.
A while back I lost my matsuba which I posted on here, and my goshiki unfortunately passed a month or so later for no apparent reason, this was when the water was heavily coloured and I could only see the fish as they fed so when he didn't come up for a few days then suddenly popped up with dropsy I was gutted as it was my favourite fish. probably NPS, although strangely them 2 were brought together and added in winter which I think was a bad idea in hindsight after seeing others mentioning issues similar in the past. It's all a learning curve and a something I won't risk again anyway.
Since then I have been religiously checking parameters every week before a water change to ensure everything is fine which it has been, zero ammonia and traces of nitrite and nitrate but so low its almost not there at all, all other fish have been very happy and any white on the fins mentioned previously in posts has cleared up which was probably caused by the constant fluctuations in temperature.
I won't be making anymore fish purchases this year now as I think it is best to let the pond settle for a while and find its rhythm and focus on getting the inhabitants that are currently there as big and healthy as possible. And hopefully my microscope will arrive this week so I am prepared to act fast on any issue that does arrive.
Sorry for the long post, I thought a update was due as I haven't posted much recently!

Absolutely stunning pattern mate. A very nice Goshiki indeed!
Who is the breeder?
Looks like it needs some fattening up.... Keep an eye on parameters and feed as much as you can get away with

Thanks for the comments. The koi is from Ogata Koi farm which I think all the koi logic fish come from. The bloodline for parent fish on the site are Dainichi & Sakai bloodlines so they come from a very good background. All being said the Goshiki was not from either as it's a Goshiki I have a lovely Kohaku and Showa from there both as Tosai which I am excited to see how they progress though.
Its definitely a hungry one at the moment and I have been feeding my tablespoon of food every few hours over the weekend with all parameters being fine. Routine 10% water change this afternoon which always includes several purges of the bottom drain (loads of crap this week as upped feeding to 3 times a day) followed by Clay. Keeping an eye on the temp its currently just over 16 but will feed 3 times a day, 6am,6pm and 10pm as I have been unless it drops much more which is possible with the forecast in which case I will stop the 10pm feed. I wish May would arrive properly and we could get them growing!

Cracking fish, lovely pattern I can’t go past the pond without them going nuts, so it’s little and often for my fish.

I do like goshiki have seen a few this year that have been stunning, bought a shiro and a Showa so that will be it for the year.
next year hopefully I will get another.
lovely pattern on it hopefully it will settle in well and we will have a good summer for it to grow
only just set the feeder up and the weathers changes! One dose three times a day at moment and a little by hand.

Hi Samp,
Interested to know how this one developed?
Reading around and I believe the Ogata Goshiki come from Hosokai bloodline. I believe, but can't be certain, that Ogata used to be a Dealer for Hosokai bred Koi and now they breed themselves with the Goshiki bred from Hosokai stock.
In all honesty most of the Ogata Goshiki look average at best and to me look over priced considering the quality (I'm talking about fish that look like pond fillers for £300), but every now and again they'll have some in a higher price bracket (£500+) that are yet to fully develop, similar to yours, and I wonder how they turn out after a year or 2.

DONT DO IT!! Lol. After a year or so this fish started to lose the beni, it kind of looked like the skin was peeling so I do wonder if it suffered from sun burn and this was partially the reason, however having spoken to Sinx on here, he had an Ogata Goshiki and he had the exact same thing. As you can see in the initial picture, the beni looks thick and nice, and for a while it was an absolute cracker when the rest of the fish went almost black, the beni glowed and it really did look incredible.
Now it has half the Beni in the 2nd step and the third and 4th, the whole head bit has all but gone apart from a tiny patch on one cheek! When I measure up I will get a picture of it now, it was 55cm last year if I remember correctly so not a bad size for a male Goshiki really having always been told they don't do the sort of size you get from other koi.

Lol, too late.
I wonder if it could have been Hikui causing the peeling?
Out of interest, once fully coloured up, how long did the period of it looking amazing last?

Pretty much lasted a year, started to lose the beni the following summer. I might have just been unlucky as we all know koi are always a gamble. It is a shame though as it really was a cracking fish, especially when it darkened right up. It could have been hikui, it was across its whole body if I remember correctly and the best explanation would be like a snake shedding its skin. I also had it in a paddling pool for a little while when I emptied and refilled my pond which got to around 30 degrees so this also wouldn't have helped, although none of the other fish had symptoms like it in the pond before or since.
The worst thing for me is that it has put me off goshiki for myself anyway, I would love a nice big one with floating beni, but I worry about having the same issue and now I have a £500 pond filler that could be another fish. Don't think I could part with it though! They were my favourite variety until I got into Showa.

pug has a very impressive veg filter on his pond, have a look at some of his his youtube videos....
