New addition - Kase Doitsu Metallic Ochiba

My missus hates these and doesn't understand my fascination with Doitsu Metallic Ochiba's..... But I've bought another one.

These are the fish that started it all (the nicer one)..... One that I saw 2 years ago but at just under £1700 wouldn't ever be able to afford:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gzii...ature=emb_logo

The closest I could find around the £100 mark was this one which I've now had for 2 years, lovely friendly fish that hasn't deteriorated in the slightest since I've had it, but doesn't want to grow past 40cm and the metallic isn't as reflective as I wanted. (The markings change colour through the year between dark brown in the summer to this orange colour in winter and spring which I love about it).

So I asked Gary at Gatwick Koi to find me one as close to those in the video but for under £200 and bred by Kase. This was the only one he could find, a 28cm Nisai so I accepted it and have chucked it into my 380 litre fry tank until the pond temp warms up:

The brown is a bit more gold rather than brown, but the metallic sheen is much more reflective than my first Metallic Ochiba so I'm looking forward to see how it develops as it grows.

The other funny thing is the size, 2 years old and Nisai, yet quite small compared to my home grown 8 Month old Tosai and only a little bigger than the runt.

    That's strange Fred.

The top one seems to love my water, thrives really well and always first for food during winter but did get sick for a few days last winter when I fed before a sudden temp drop. Swim bladder was affected and she was sinking to the bottom, then she lost weight and got skinny. This year has been milder and she's much happier.

I think the new one is at risk of shimmies, or having black patches develop. I'm guessing that she has some Kikokoryu blood in her as these seem to be mainly what Kase breeds... I think he simply spawns fish and names them whatever they look like as he has similar fish but without the metallic sheen that he calls Ki Kikokoryu and doitsu kin showa that also look similar in shape and body.

She's currently at 18C and settled very well in the tiny vat. She also came up for food before the babies.

Had to lift the filter return pipe above water level to make more oxygen.... getting a bit cramped in the vat now. Water changes will have to be every 3 days.

Great to here. Mate that it has settled in well. It is a lovely fish.
Yeah mate don t know what it is. I just can t seem to keep them. Same with gin rin type of fish. Yet other fish are always good.
Like ogons. Sanke. Showas. Shushi. Matalics. Seem always fine. It's got to be something with my water chemistry. That's all I can put my finger on. As my water tests are always spot on.
I may buy one to test it out in the future. Now the pond is 4 years mature. Because there one of my favourite fish to look at.

Ha ha, CCTV would crash if it saw stuffy sneaking around.

    Only kidding stuffy.

Fred, I know what your saying about water. At my last place all my fancy goldfish would eventually die from dropsy, it must have been the water, there was nothing else it could be. If I poured a glass of water and left it on the side for 30 minutes it would become undrinkable with a nasty metallic taste. Always suspected it wasn't doing the fish much good.

Your spot on John, Ochiba are grey and brown.

Doitsu Ochiba are also grey and brown but it's harder to get the right shade of brown so sometimes it looks more golden.

Doitsu metallic Ochiba are more silver and brown which I think look even better, but again, they are rare so it's hard to get the exact colours which is why mine is more towards silver and bronze.

This is my Doitsu grey and orange/brown one, and it definitely lives up to the name of "fallen leaves on water" because more than 1 person who saw it last summer thought it had a leaf stuck to its head!
