they'd only just been fed! like 10 minutes earlier

to be fair though i hand feed pretty much everyday,
and anytime i put my hands in the water doing maintenance they're all over them...

thanks,
yes mate, heated to 20C
about the only plus point of a small pond, heating is cheaper.
downside, i need to rebuild it bigger next year...
currently there are 3 tosai around 28cm
one nisai 38cm (ochiba)
feeding about 25g Queni Koi japan mix a day, and odd treats prawn, mussel ect...
spread over 4-5 times a day.

Make sure the wife finds a koi she is in love with bigger the better then you have to build a BIG pond to grow some thing like that haha

This is the solution.... Worked for me!
After building 7000 litre pond she says, "This looks really intrusive on the garden, its huge".
Took her to Koi Dealer and she fell in love with an 18cm Shiro, bought it for her. By end of summer she was so pleased that it was knocking on 30cm. Told her it wouldn't grow anymore due to size of pond, and if it did grow it would be too big for pond and we need to start looking to find it a new home.
Permission granted for a 5000 litre extension!
Whilst building she's like "This is huge, looks really intrusive on the garden".
3 Months after the extension her Shiro is knocking on 40cm, she says, "Are you sure the pond is big enough for it to keep growing, maybe you should have done it a bit bigger".
Haven't got it in me to get the shovel out again.

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
