Super happy with it, it's been constantly changing, the blue hue on the sides has been getting nicer which means there's gonna be some lovely Sumi there soon. Thinking about getting a Beni kumonryu soon.

Looks fantastic, and definitely worth more now than you probably paid..... which I think is very rare.

Was it a fluke or did you have a good idea at Tosai as to what it may turn out like?

Would love to see more threads like this, it's the most interesting aspect of Koi keeping and we can learn so much from it.

For example, I have bought beautiful Tosai that lose all their colour and end up just white / plain. They are different varieties but is it coincidence they all came from the same breeder?

Also I found it interesting that a baby Kohaku that looked almost completely red bar a few thin white gaps between the steps.... As it grew the white stretched and now it looks so much more balanced.

And things I'd like to understand better.....

Tosai Shusui that turn black..... It was cheap, but do more expensive Nisai or Sansai ones avoid this problem, or will it always happen in my water?

I want to buy a nice Goshiki, but frightened it will look rubbish within a year in my hard water.

Think we need a Koi development thread, showing good and bad results!

I'd seen kumonryu on Google so thought yeah this will go nicely with the ginrin kigoi, ochiba, soragoi and chagoi. I didn't expect it to change so quickly. Although apparently kumonryu constantly change their pattern depending on water quality, temp and food etc. I definitely ain't the right person to ask about losing patterns lol but id probably say maybe food depends on the parent fish as well. All mine come from koda which so far I've got no complaints with his fish, all doing very well and good.
Buy the goshiki and see how it turns out might be surprised.

Might buy a cheap baby Goshiki from the best Goshiki breeder (Kanno) and see how it develops before spending more on one.

Lots of stunning Nisai Goshiki coming out of Japan this season, so hopefully there will be some reasonable Tosai next year.

I don't think parent Koi make a huge amount of difference to fry quality much of the time.... even a grand champion koi from a 400,000 egg spawning will have at least 380,000 siblings that had to be culled.

Some of the nicest Shiro Utsuris are a byproduct of Showa spawnings, Sanke's from Kohaku spawnings, etc etc.

I wonder what a shiro utsi and kumonryu would produce, think i might try that see if I can get something even more unique.

some of the grow and shows, show how much one batch can end up differing depending on a range of factors each keeping creates.

I actually bought the kumonryu on the 4th October. So in such a short space of time it's changed.

I bought a 4" Kumonryu near the end of last year. I thought it had disappeared or a seagull had taken it because I didn't see it until the middle of this summer. It has actually turned completely black which is great camouflage against the bottom of the pond.
