RS. The pinking up could be because of different water chemistry. From grow on to pond. And it is stressing the fish. And the different environment and change.
Certain fish just do not like change. Just a thought mate.

Cheers Fred.
I'd been using pond water for water changes in the 2 weeks leading up to the transfer, was just adding hot tap water to it to get temps right so I don't think it's the water.
Could be the environment change as they had sleeping sickness when I moved them last year (glad about that now as they'll be immune) and took a couple of weeks to get out of it, but this time they're acting happy and lively.
Could be some underlying stress from the change that we just can't see. And the pee in the pond don't help either! Ammonia peaked at less than 0.2 today and Pond bomb arrived as well so water should stay sweet now.

Hi John,
Missed your post. Yes, still pink but not as bad.
Gave it a salt bath and it improved dramatically then after a few days went pink again. Quite a few of the top 3 rows of scales have gone slightly red, sort of a bloodshot look to them.
Odd thing is, some of the other babies show signs of stress now and again but the pinked up one doesn't. For example the small one isolated itself for a couple of days but still ate although not enthusiastically but is back fine again now, and the orange one has been completely fine throughout, then last night was clamped up on the bottom and refused to move. It worried me. Then this morning its swimming around like normal again and eating fine.
Can't find any parasites so can only put it down to the temperature fluctuations at this time of year.

Here's a shot of the Tancho taken today. Even this one is a little bit pink in places.
11.5 Months old.
Sumi filling in at the back and bottom but still more to go at the top and front.

Thanks John.
I do like that tancho even though she's one of those with a small head that's going to develop a hump.
The orange mutt one looks so good in the pond which surprises me. The koi snob in me still wants to move it on but despite the lack of kohaku pattern the orange and white stands out just as much as my real kohaku.
The small one is starting to slowly develop Sumi.
It is strange but I do get the odd sulker for a day or 2 at this time of year and the same happened over the last 2 springs.
Oddly after lots of heavy rain the other day I had no sulkers for a couple of days and they all stayed lively.
These are issues nobody else would really spot, just that I know my koi and their behaviour so it stands out to me, as I'm sure is the same with all of us.

This is very true Rs everyone knows their own koi and can spot a sulker or something wrong with them.
Know what you mean about koi with a hump.
Personally I hate them but some folk like them,I really like a koi with a good head and plenty of space between the eyes but unfortunately not all of mine are like that.
Been moving on the ones not up to it but the numbers are getting smaller as they arnt being replaced.John

Ha ha, reminds me of my Hi Utsuri, really nice body shape (for a male), nice head shape, but his eyes.... They are so close together I get cross eyed looking at him

Loved reading the story of these koi, great growth in such a short time and love how the tancho is developing.(fav)
were the parents large fish ?

Hi, Yes, the parents are reasonably large.
All credit to Davej who bred them, all I did was turn up and take 4 fry from him. He thought I was crazy taking so few, but I knew I'd find it hard to part with them once I got attached, so these 4 were just to have a play with.
Obviously mine aren't a patch on the quality of the parents, but considering how few fry grow without deformities and even fewer become proper "Showa", Shiro Utsuri or Tancho Showa, I've been exceptionally lucky to have ended up with one of each.

Those parent fish are stunning, would you know roughly how many go on to be stunning fish?

Just a calculated guess as my breeding experience is with Fancy Goldfish as opposed to Koi, and some varieties will be easier than others, but I'd say for a variety like Showa maybe you'll ultimately get 12 stunners from a spawning of 300,000 eggs, and maybe 300 that will be of high enough quality to grow for 2 years before selling on as high grade Nisai.
But even to get those 12 stunners, you'll need to get the parent set right.
Oh, and have the knowledge required not to cull them out in error when they're small. No easy task when you consider my Shiro was brown, the Tancho was completely grey and only the small one looked like it had any chance of being a Showa. As it turns out the Tancho and the Shiro are better koi than the small one.Last edited by RS2OOO; 07-05-2020 at 12:29 AM.

Amazing how few of great quality koi you get from such a large spawning, one day when I get the time I’d love to try and do what you did

Quick update that I'm going to move 3 of these baby Koi on now.
They are available for collection from near Dartford Bridge and are free to any forum contributors who've followed their progress.
£60 for the 3 to anyone outside of the forum or who is a new member.
Koi 1: Shiro Utsuri (small red patch on side which will hopefully get covered by Sumi). Measured a few days ago at 34cm. Already hand feeding. Pinks up at the slightest increase of ammonia - makes a good pond canary! I suspect this one is female due to its nature and feeding habits.
Koi 2: Showa, quite pretty, eats lots but not growing quite as fast as the others. Last measured at 27cm, now estimated to be at least 28cm which are still brilliant sizes for Tosai. I would guess towards this one being female, but really too early to tell with any confidence.
Koi 3: A White fry from the Showa Spawning. Don't know if that makes it a Kohaku? Will never be a show winner but looks surprisingly pretty in the pond. Occasionally hand feeds. I think it will grow quite long. Last measured at 35cm but I suspect its longer now. No idea what sex this one is but it acts and looks like a male.
All of them have been thoroughly scraped and are 100% clean and full of health.

I like and agree with your sale Rs.
Let's hope you get a genuine transaction as I think you and your koi deserve it.
Noticed price of koi has gone up a lot and I am now thinking better to breed my own.John
