I am experimenting feed wise this year.
1 big feed a day . Instead of lots of 5 to 6
Little feeds.
Which I did with my others. The last few years.
I don t see a difference in growth. More or less same size. As other years.
Time will tell.
I am baffled. I thought they would grow slower.
There looking good RS. Coming a long nicely.

That'll be interesting Fred, because I haven't noticed the growth difference either. Back to feeding lots again now.
Would be a good experiment if you had 2 batches of fry to compare the difference.

What I have found is they fill up fast then two minutes later they are looking for more,so greedy allways hungry.
Feed mine little and often,,last feed is at half four when they get a lot and let them graze on it and that's it no lights at all.John

Don't count them.... just know that a big pinch is around 20 pellets, and I've only got 4 fry .
The little one only gets 1 or 2 per feed, because she's stupid and won't go to the surface on her own, will only follow the others, who then eat the food before she gets there!
Even with mussels she follows the others, who then eat it. But she won't leave the shoal to feed by herself even if she spots the food first.
That's the frustrating thing with only a small number of fish, if you get a stupid small one, it stays small and stupid.

24 Weeks old.
Sumi developing slowly.
Largest one is over 20 cm, smallest I think around 15cm.
Currently at approx. 18C, unheated but in the Lean-To / Conservatory. The large night/day temp fluctuations don't seem to bother them and they're eating loads.

I didn't notice Mark Gardner's koi-raising videos mentioned in this thread, but perhaps they may be of interest to one or two of you:

Its quality of water as much as quantity to help growth ?? So water must be spot on

It is mate. Change 75% per week... With buckets to temp match.
The pressure filter is brilliant at maintaining parameters. To be honest I've always found pressure filters good for bio and more bullet proof than moving bed... But that's just my experience.

Coming along well Rs, think yours are the same age as mine born in May?
Dont hear from Davej wonder how his are doing.
Good idea with the pressure filter though I have never used one, gone back to a couple of brushes in my settlement as it wasnt coping very well and must say it is doing a great job trapping the crap, thanks to Stuffyrats idea when he was here.John

Yep, born in may John.
I have never even cleaned out the pressure filter I'm using despite chucking loads of food in multiple times a day.
It is rated for 4000lph but I'm running 10,000 lph through on a 380 litre tank and water is crystal clear and parameters perfect. Fish have no choice to grow as they need the strength to deal with the extremely strong water current. I have no idea how they sleep what with having to constantly swim so hard. (Pump is off for the photos).
Yet every now and again I'll get a nitrite or ammonia spike in the main pond despite having 76 litres of k1 moving bed. But in pond terms 2 year old media is still not classed as fully mature.
Shame Davej hasn't updated his fry thread but I'm sure he'll be back.Last edited by RS2OOO; 08-11-2019 at 10:44 AM.

26 Weeks / 6 Months since being spawned.
Another clean out and measure up for the Showa fry..... Guess they aren't fry or fingerlings anymore, assume Tosai now.
Had a shock with the tape measure, biggest one coming in at 26cm (now at 26 weeks old, so a growth of 1cm per week), and I'd guess the smallest one about 19cm.
That got me excited, especially when looking on Dealer websites and many are selling Nisai at 25cm!
More shocking is that they're in just 380 litres of water and are stuck there till Spring now. Had no idea they'd get this big!
Run out of photo storage space so this is hosted on postimage and you might need to click photo for full size.
When I turn pump off they all huddle together in the corner, which is handy as I can get them all in 1 photo!
Temp currently 17C

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
