Hi Wain,
I can recommend New Forest koi and Cuttlebrook, wouldn't recommend the one in York cant remember their name but wasnt impressed with their fry.
Your best to get 6 week old as easier to keep and usually from May time onwards, dont get too many to start with.John

Spoke to stuffy when I wanted to do it he said get over 6 weeks old as feeding the younger ones is a complete mare. I know my knowledge isnt good enough for that stuff yet culling, deforms, hand picking the cream of them. Love watching it tho so Wain lots of photos and updates

Depends how small they are.
Mine were 4 weeks old when I collected and went straight onto powdered food (Queni Koi stage 2 I think).
For the first 2 weeks, and possibly 4 weeks if slow growing it is good to feed them live brine shrimp / artemia, and for that you need to set up a hatching factory which is a pain in the arse.
So I would agree with AJ and Stuffy, but still worth a punt down to 4 weeks old if they are big enough.

Got a three foot aquarium in the garage to use initially so be OK for light, heat, filter etc up to decent size to fend for themselves outside
then looking at a small pond/pool either inside garage (less natural light) or outside (open to elements) . . . but got a couple of months to go "firm" on which way to go
Fingerlings look good value but growth / colour already known
looking at 9 week fry so more jeopardy in what outcome will be , ,want to see the development at close quarter . . nice mutts will do not looking for "show fish"
gonna be my lockdown project1000 gal

Tonight I was asked if I was interested in buying some koi and was sent various photos and videos of koi for sale.
Unbelievably, amongst them were 3 of the fry from this thread that have somehow found themselves in stock at a freelance koi dealer!
How mad is that!
They were Ł70 - Ł80 each as well lol.

I like the development on the tancho. That aside, I would like to one day breed my own koi to enter into shows. Do you think doing smth like what you've done w/ the four fish here would be a good way for me to get some experience in raising fry before I'm able to breed my own?

Definitely a good way to get that initial experience. It may be really easy, or you may come across unexpected challenges and you'll only know by trying it.
Think it will take a few years of breeding before getting show quality koi. Choosing the right parent set, selecting the right fry to keep etc are the initial challenges, and keeping the fry healthy can be a challenge as you may get bouts of sleeping sickness disease and other unexpected issues as they develop.

2 Years ago today at approx. 4.5 - 5cm.
Today at approximately 42cm. (Sumi not fully stable yet and seems to fade during hotter months but will come back heavier in Autumn).
And now have another batch of fry which are currently 6mm,not sure what to do with them yet but may net a few from wildlife pond to raise indoors.Last edited by RS2OOO; 09-07-2021 at 11:49 AM.

Fibreglass repair kit for the leaking vat arrived today.
Will get that fixed up and set up for Autumn.
At the moment they need to stay in wildlife pond as are too small to see and catch, and chasing them around with a net stirs up the muck so you can't see anything. Maybe they'll be big enough to catch come September.

From another forum member off here. I only took 4x 2 week old fry just to have a dabble with raising them and all 4 turned out entirely different which was a nice result.
Currently raising a small batch of my own fry. Well, I dumped the eggs in the wildlife pond and have a few survivors that I'll pull out towards end of summer and raise them over winter.

This is an amazing thread that was very pleasant to read.
Great job in growing out these koi ! They really grew a lot and at a fast pace. And the one you kept...is really a keeper.
I had some fry this year (totally unexpected) and have around 50 in the tank. I never gave them any special feeding (appart from smashing the pellets) and the growing nicely -but much slower than yours did, obivously.
Maybe IŽll make a thread of my own, inspired in yours
