Not much change except a small amount of growth and signs of Sumi coming through on the Tancho. Hoping this could become a nice koi, all depends how well balanced the black and white ends up.

The Tancho also has what looks to me as almosth perfect Motoguru on the pecs.

In the top photo, why have you wrapped the top koi with streaky bacon?

    Ready for Christmas dinner.

Shortage of sausages, so we're going for mussel fed koi in blankets

    This Week's pic....

    31 weeks old.

Changes over the course of just 1 week are subtle, but they are there. Hard to notice if any growth on a week to week basis and I think growth has slowed right down due to cooler temps (Average 15C - 16C now).

Pressure filter is working superbly, to be honest I don't check parameters, just get an eye for when water needs changing as it gets a yellowish tinge and I change 75% every 6 days or so. (They're in just 80 gallons).

I find it amazing that these were a scoop of 4 completely random fry from a single spawning, yet all look so different to each other.

They definitely look much smaller in photos than real life and the biggest is probably over 26cm now.

    Cheers fellas.

Don't heat, just have a radiator in the lean-to that comes on when the house heating is on.

Its not very well insulated so there must be a fair fluctuation of day/night temps as room temp goes down to about 10C at night, and up to 19C when heating on. Temp in the vat hasn't yet gone below 14C or above 17C since October and generally sits around 15C.

    Cheers Fred.

Even though temps are cool they're still getting around 5 feeds a day.

The 4 "Tosai" are still doing well, but it's become a full time job keeping on top of the water changes with just 380 litres of water.

The water *goes off after just a few days now so I'm changing around 230 litres every 4th day or so. Due to their temperature being around 14-17C I'm having to temperature match the fresh water in buckets which takes ages.

Even if I put a hose pipe on my kitchen mixer tap it is nigh on impossible to adjust the taps to refill at the right temp.

If anyone can think of an easy way I'd welcome the suggestions.

*By goes off I mean after 3 to 4 days the water goes a yellowish colour and has loads of protein bubbles and smells a bit. The actual parameters are perfect except for PH which starts to drop and Nitrate which shoots off the chart.

Still happy with my decision to winter them inside, just didn't think they would grow so big and require so many water changes. They are catching up with my smallest Sansai in the main pond, yet are 2.5 years younger!

Will post some more pics over the next couple of weeks but visibly they haven't changed a huge amount. I don't think the Sumi will darken much more until they are outside in the proper pond.

Can you not just do smaller more frequent changes?

Problem is it takes time that I don't often have every evening after work.
I could do 4 or 5 buckets with each night but don't think that'll be enough.

Can potentially set that up, it's just the temperature aspect unless it's just a drip drip drip.... But not sure if at the required speed not to affect temps it would change enough water.

Might have to go with the option above to fill buckets up each night and leave them in the kitchen to temp match by themselves.

Funny thing is if I leave buckets in the conservatory they don't reach the temperature of the vat even though it's in the same room. For some reason the vat is always warmer.

Obviously I could feed less... But I'm so excited about getting good growth that's a last resort.

Is it pump fed could it be the pump making the difference in the vat

I have read before that air pumps produce a lot of heat and this heat is transferred to the air and then warms the water.

Probably is the pump.... It's working hard, yet takes up 1/4 of the vat floor.

Not complaining about the free heat, it's great, just complicates temperature matching the fresh water.

Filled 12 buckets up yesterday and left them in the Kitchen hoping they'd temperature match by themselves making water changes easier.

Buckets got up to 17C, but the Vat was at 19C !

Think I'll just have to put up with doing it manually twice a week.

The Koi have grown and colours have deepened very slightly, but didn't get any pics as water current too strong to see past the surface, and each time I turn the pump off and back on the filter starts leaking.... so I didn't bother.

Will make an effort to get more pics soon.

Also a Koi that I bought is ready for collection.... Gonna have to add it to the vat up until Spring, so it'll need even more water changes!

Will have over 100cm of Koi in just 380 litres! Crazy, but by keeping on top of water changes they're thriving really well, except the odd bruise from crashing lol.
