Ha ha, wondered that myself mate.
I look at the koi, look at the tape measure and think there's no way they're that big, but when you hold the tape measure against them underwater that's definitely the correct size.
Their fins look really small as well, maybe because they are in 47cm deep water when the photos are taken or maybe they have grown too fast and their fins haven't caught up, but for example, look at the Pectoral fins on the 26cm orange one:
And compare with these which all measure smaller than the fry but look bigger in the body and definitely have much bigger fins:

Looking good Rs,just caught up with this as been away for a couple of days.
The Shiro utsuri, does the greyish colour go white ?
I have a few of them but light grey and black and wondered if the grey did go white.
I also have brown with black on,what are they?John

This particular Shiro was from an experimental spawning by Hoshikin in 2017 and the grey you refer to was actually blue which made the koi very cheap due to the uncertainty as to how it would turn out. It stayed blue till this year and is now turning white, albeit not a super clean white, but still it's a lovely koi.
I would guess that Shiros from different breeders develop differently so on an Omasako Shiro (recognised as the top Shiro breeder) anything that isn't pure white is probably underlying Sumi.
Since doing the big water change yesterday the baby koi have gone off food. Wondering if I made a mistake with the temperature match or if there was extra chemicals in the tap water, but the food from this morning was still floating around tonight.

Hi John,
Not 100% sure what the brown with black on it is, but I remember a post from Davej saying on Showa fry it is Sumi and Beni coming through overlayed, and the Sumi will likely pull back and the red will come through. That didn't actually happen with my brown fry, it actually turned black and white!
Mine are eating a mix of 4mm Saki Growth and 6mm Kusuri multi season pellets now. 6mm ones are big but they manage to squeeze 3 or 4 in at a time so they don't have any problems with them. Had to mix the Saki with Kusuri as they're eating so much now and Saki is pricey.
Here's the development of that Shiro. Not great pics, but you can see how the blue/grey eventually receded and turned white, albeit not a pure white.

Most recent pic. The white isn't quite as bad as it looks because she had sunburn when this pic was taken, but you can see the blue/grey has gone, and actually she is losing some Sumi around the face and head. You can see the Kirin is catching up with her size wise as well. I'd guess the Shiro is now about 40cm.

Hi John,
Have a look at page 1 of this thread..... You can see what the brown koi fry looked like, and Davej commented saying about it being beni and sumi. But that brown one is the one that now looks like a Shiro except for one tiny red patch on the side.

Thanks Johnathan and Fred for the nice comments.
I don't think my Koi are super high quality. I'm pretty fussy about choosing a new one and think mine are good for the money I spend on them, but there's always that dream to own really high quality expensive ones. The cheapest of those was £16 and most expensive was £225.
Everyone says a Koi pond isn't complete without a Chag or Ogon, just that I get attracted to multi-coloured koi more.
But I like the look of Mizuho Ogon, like these:

I'm definitely going to end up over stocked aren't I.
Buying new Koi is great

Asked the missus which 2 I should keep.
She loves the 2 bottom ones, the Orange one and the white one (which used to be the brown one lol), but I like the Tancho and the little one.
Only reason I'd keep the orange one is because I think it will grow huge, but I'm not keen on the pattern.

I would go for the top one as when the sumi comes through it will look good.
Bottom one too much red for me.
Just my opinion we are all different.John

Been thinking about getting one of those all morning since posting the link. Looked in the pond and thought it would go perfectly with the existing Koi colours. Nisai are a bit pricey (£3-500 ish) so will see if I can get a Tosai one next year.
Here's some fresh in from Japan, love the 2nd one:
https://www.koiwatergarden.com/koi-f...s%5B%5D=Mizuho
The repair is holding up ok so far, been worried about it because all the lawn around that area is really boggy and slushy with all the rain, and the rain water run-off from the cover floods it even more.
To be honest I think the pond is big enough surface area wise, total internal dimensions are 4.4m x 2.4m, its the depth that could do with being deeper - only 1.2m. To do that is a massive job due to bottom drain concreted in all the way from pond to filter pit, then the cost of another box weld liner.
