    I hate computers

I have spent the last few days on an off trying to get the external monitor for my laptop to work on audio so the sound is coming from it rather than the laptop itself. Tried different settings, updating drivers, running fault diagnostic and even buying a replacement 3.5mm stereo audio jack only to find out that instead of trying to make the monitor the sound device I should have made the headphones the sound device. I had an HDMI to VGA cable connected between the laptop and the monitor which I found out that was only any good for video but not sound so realised I needed a 3.5mm male to male stereo jack to get the sound. If the monitor had an HDMI connection instead of a VGA and DVI connections I would have only needed one lead HDMI to HDMI and the problem would have been solved days ago. It was only after realising that the cable was being plugged into the headphone socket that I thought to try the sound setting using that rather than the monitor and the bloody thing started to work. Every diagnostic check I did showed no fault so I just thought it was something wrong with the settings on the monitor.

    I hate computers.

It was a case of -

Tried this option and the computer said "No"
Tried another option and the computer said "No"
Tried numerous other options and the computer said "No"

If it was 'No because if this or that' it would have been a lot easier to work it out.

I've got a few different audio options on my PC i just click the sound icon in the task bar(bottom right) and select the output device
but yeah VGA is video only... not seen a VGA cable for donkeys currently on Display Port

It is an old 19" iiyama Prolite monitor I was given a year or so ago so might explain no HDMI or USB connections on it Dave.
I just recently replaced replaced an even older 22" iiyama Prolite monitor that I was also given. Annoyingly the 22" was a 16:9 screen and the 19" is a 4:3 screen. Still bigger than the laptop screen though.

1 year is a lifetime in computer terms. I'm fairly sure you can still buy the same models new on Amazon.
