Everyone to their own Johnathan, presume you had the hybrid automatic 1800cc.
Your the first I have heard give bad reports about it and i wouldn't go back to manual now.
It is a bit small but big enough for us.
Must admit I like the diesel as had loads in the past but expensive to run now with fuel prices.

    same as john,
if you get a good auto box, made me change my mind on auto's

that said, i still loved to nip around urban areas in the missus 1.4 fiesta manual,
...until it failed the MOT a year ago... still need to get that sorted....

It's not the box I don't like . Am getting to old and lazy for manual and that was one main buying point when we got the freelander that we needed a auto box !! Had this argument with Sam when he was looking for a new motor and would only have manual!!! LOSER . Needs to be auto now lol

    Manual all the way.

Autos just take the enjoyment out of driving for me.

Just had my 5 speed box rebuilt for the Escort with a Quaife Pro heavy duty straight cut gearset. Looking forward to all the comments from the petrol station punters as I pull in..... "Your gearbox sounds knackered mate" And I just nod back and say "yeah" without telling them its more valuable than their entire car

Driving old fords and you don't get any choice in the matter - its either double clutch or it aint going in

That said, about 20 years ago my clutch cable snapped in the Escort (4 speed box) driving down the Old Kent Road and I managed to drive back to Charlton changing gear with no clutch by rev matching and timing the traffic lights from half mile up the road.

The M3 has a horrible gear change when cold and I tend to double clutch that from 1st to 2nd for the first 15 minutes or so.

many of a tune was played on a gearbox. especially the erf where fourth gear was top right and third bottom left before you touched the splitter box and started all over again.

Remember them well Keith as that is what I learnt in.
Gears were in a circle and as you say top right was 5th really as they had a crawler gear, then split and go all over again.
Sed Atkinson were similar with the Cummins engine

Finished my truck driving on a Volvo 500hp automatic so easy to drive.

1, So push button start on a cold morning?? How do you heat your plugs or dose it just do it its self ??
2, being auto what's best practice for traffic lights , just keep in D and foot on brake or in to neutral. Heard swopping cab damage the box??

FL2, most reliable Land Rover to date, I had two of them, An 07 plate and a facelift 10 plate.
when you press the start button, it will automatically start cranking when the glow plugs have heated up, when it’s cold you will notice a slight delay from pressing the button to starting to crank where as in the summer it cranks instantly, colder the weather, the longer the delay.

DAB was never brilliant in the FL2, it has 3 DAB aerials, including one in the rear side windows, the other side is FM, the elements you see in the rearmost side windows are the ariel’s, not heating elements, as many complain they get misted up and won’t clear.

Short stop at the light just put the handbrake on leaving it in drive, any lengthy stop knock it in to neutral.

Any info needed, Freel2.com is where you need to look, used to be one of the best forums in its day.

if you have tried launch control yet, you need to try it, (only capable if you have terrain Response) you depart from traffic light like a scolded cat, we learnt it a LRE.

Launch control??? !!!! . . Be trying that when I get it back . Our lass was driving home from shopping on the 23rd and it lost power she pulled over and in D or R it just kicked out black smoke the revs were all over just bouncing from just above 0 to just above 1k and it sounded as if the exhaust at the rear was beathing when in P !! ???

Horrible feeling it could have ingested the swirl flaps, hope not.

Launch Control, select Mud/ruts, gives you full four wheel drive and traction control off, select drive, left foot on the foot brake, right foot acceleration at 3500 rpm, on the green light left foot off the brake. Was taught that on a Land Rover Experience day.

They also used to say that in the snow, the FL2 was their choice to get them home out of all the other LR’s they had available.
