Whats the point of locking cars...?

just seen this in a youtube video...
locksmith but easily picked a car lock in less than 60 seconds that gave also the key code to cut a new key....
cut the new key and coded it in another couple of minutes....

Purpose of locking my car- to deter idiot opportunists. So it is insured when someone breaks into it. To set the alarm. To arm the cameras. So it is immobilised making it almost impossible to steal without the key or App to unlock it

In all fairness security has come a long way now that you need lock picking knowledge to open it.

Gone are the days of using a lollipop stick or a key from another of the same model.

There is now kit easily available online, even from Amazon that will enable you to open up and demobilise practically any car, key or no key.

The car I'm slowly building now will have a hidden PIR fitted from the house alarm, so any attempted break-in from outside the house will set off the house alarm.

Another really cheap and common method of vehicle tracking in car enthusiast circles is to install the guts of an old iphone within the car's electrical system so the car can be tracked using "find my phone" type apps. A lot cheaper than paying for a tracker device and no ongoing subscription.

Well they show the amount of picking tools they need to pick every car, so that should be some comfort. You are either going to get people that only target one type of car, or they will need the full set of tools. Not to forget that though it only takes a minute for an experienced locksmith, it takes a lot longer when you are worried about being caught. So if you're just trying to steal things from inside it is still quicker to smash a window. And as the other person says, technology has progressed since this.

I like the idea of installing an old iPhone. I was thinking of using something like an AirTag, but an iPhone has better accuracy, and I'm sure I have an old one in a drawer somewhere. I think I'll suggest this to a few of my friends too.

IWas awoken at 4am by Alexa warning me “there was someone at the front door,”sure enough, one was scanning the front door for the key fobs, the other stood by the drivers door hoping it would open. They were unsuccessful, we don’t use the front door, so the keys are around the back of the house. Have also adding a visible steering lock.

Thought I had lowered the risk when I sold the Discovery 4, I was wrong.

That's pretty horrible to know they were trying to target you. But at least it ended well for you.

Apparently my postcode has the highest rate for car thefts in the UK. Cars, SUV's specifically, are constantly being nicked. From what I've heard, the process being they drive them to Tilbury docks, get them in a container and get them shipped out of the UK. It seems they have carte blanche and have been operating for years, knowing the police do absolutely FA to stop them.

Most cars down our street now have steering wheel locks. What a sad state of affairs.

Unfortunately Faraday boxes, steering wheel locks and trackers are pretty much a necessity nowadays. That or just have a really s*£t car that they won't want to nick.

lots of people round here now have anti theft lockable driveway posts that are concreted 6ft in the ground, to stop the cars being easily taken.
brother in law, sister in law, and a few mates have had cars taken off the drive at night and never heard a thing....

the police are not interested jusat give a crime number, our borders are wide open anyone can come and go with anything at will...
and the government don't care it's like no one is in charge of the country anymore...
