    Best climber

I have a stretch of fence between us and next door cant see us seeing eye to eye in the future so wanna act now . Its their fence so I don't wanna touch it and tbf the way they have put it up I don't dare touch it good strong wind and it'll be gone what is the best climber the give a nice quick screen. Every green would be best if pos but I would like some it to flower (not ivy if at all pos)

Your best bet would be a passionflower - they’re evergreen, easy to grow and maintain, very quick to establish, and a single plant will provide dense cover with impressive height and spread. If you don’t want to touch your neighbour’s fence you’ll have to put in some type of trellis for the passionflower to scramble along and up - the one I have (passiflora - caerulea) grows up a wall along wires spaced about 1ft apart. The other great thing about this plant is that it requires minimal training, just point it’s branches roughly where you want it to go and it takes care of the rest. I cut mine back to 18” above ground in May, it now covers the wall again about 8ft up and 10ft or so wide - the only thing I have to worry about is keeping it in check! Very pretty blue flowers too!

An alternative would be clematis, but they can be fussy about where they’re planted (they like cool roots), and are not as fast growing or dense (initially) as a passionflower.

Another alternative would be to put a pleached hornbeam hedge in front of your neighbour’s fence - it would look stunning but would also be stunningly expensive!

The challenges of taking and posting a pic for a non-technophobe!! I’ll try tomorrow when the light’s a bit better.

Yes, they do look good - I was a bit sceptical at first, but it’s been amazing since it was first put in 6 years ago, just easy all round. Posts and wires should work - it’s not a heavy plant as such.

Apart from yew, which is a slow grower, I’m not a fan of conifer hedges, they can get patchy and wreck the soil. When I moved here 6 years ago I took out a leylandii “hedge” that had grown to over 40ft and re-gained over 20ft of garden along a pretty long boundary - now have a happy 6ft beech hedge there.

Your post made me look back at the pics of the leylandii coming down, def little monkeys 30ft plus up! My neighbours in that part of the garden wanted them gone, but without them moaned about how exposed they then were. All sorted with the 6ft beech hedge, but all it takes is one tricky neighbour which it sounds like you might have ..... I’ve been lucky here with neighbours, who’ve endured house refurb, 2x garden refurb, including new koi pond, but as said, all it takes is one .....

Anyway, I’ll try to post pics of the passionflower tomorrow.

For my pennies worth dont use laurels but Red Robin would give a good screen/hedge and quite quick to establish and easy to manage, been there got scum neighbours one side

Only good thing about laurels is the smell when you stick them though tge chipper and jump in back of van . Smells like marzipan (slightly poisonous but canny like haha). Should make a place just for bad neighbours and out them all there some where like Baghdad I recon like lol
