I had a focus MkII 1.8 TDCI for 12 years. Great car - just did everything average, didn't complain much other than two alternators.
So why wouldn't I touch a ford again? Inchscape ford customer service. Basically we had to get a service and an alternator fixed. They said they would pre-order the part. Then when I delivered it for the service and fitting I received a call in the afternoon and that they would have to order the alternator. I was going camping the next day for a weekend with the mrs family over from France for a weekend as a birthday treat.. I was livid. I got the fob off that there were no alternators and no chance to get the work done in time.
Really?
I rang round, found the correct alternator at a competitor franchise a short distance away. Took the car back off Inchscape. Ordered, collected the part and spent the evening taking the wheel arch off, the aircon unit to get to the final bolt (yes that the official way todo it). Then fitted the new alternator in the morning, put it all together again and loaded up and drove to the camping - a little late but still managed to have a great time. The car actually ended up being better for it - because there's two genuine ford produced alternators for the focus, a "normal" and a "high output" when I talked to the parts person as we solved the problem.. it turns out that the bracknell Inchscape ford garage had fitted the low power one a number of years earlier when the part for that car (it had all the options as a 1 year old dealer demo) is listed in the ford manuals as the high output variant.
One twitter irate rant post to the franchise Inchscape's twitter account visible to all... I got a very apologetic head guy at the dealer wanting us to pop in to the dealership. Anyway - in with the manager.. the mrs went nuts and although apologetic and after then taking more time to perform the scheduled service (free service) I never went back. We sold the car over three years ago and, although I never really had a problem with the focus as such, I won't look at another ford.
Ended up with a new 3008 SUV diesel. Which in it's first week left it's coolant on the floor due to a manufacturing problem with a coolant clasp. Being the one of the first 3008SUV in the country probably was part of the problem with early manufacturing run. Very good customer service. Fixed and no problems since in 3 years of ownership. I did spec the car without the 1.2l engine (other manufacturers seem to have a high failure rate due to the stress levels) and I didn't go for the black roof (which they changed the factory painting), a feature that has a tendency to peel, nor did I go for the pararamic roof window.. that supposedly can leak...
So that issue.. cost Inscape. Not simply the cost or the customer then but a complete brand new car sale.
The 3008 had other issues but not with the car... like being stopped at the channel tunnel.. even by the armed police who bounced up with his mates and proceeded to explain to his mates that this is the car he's ordered in a conversation with the mrs (French)..14000l, my mutts: Chargoi (2010), Doitsu (2022), Tancho (2022), Kujaku (2022), Hi Utusri (2022)

i think the issue is the individual dealers, good ones and bad ones.
i bitch and complain about the wait at the dealer i use as it's so far away, i can't just pop back home.
but compared to the local dealers they are a million times better...

Be grateful Nickuk, alternator was an engine out job on early Mondeo's.
I have an old Ford, it's a bit like triggers broom but I love it to death.
And an old BMW, but because it has an M in the badge, parts are triple the cost of any other BMW. Front and rear discs and pads supply only.....£1000

M car part prices ouch!
but it's not just 'M' cars..
i've done my own discs and pads for the last 8 years or so, ever since BMW wanted over £1600 supply and fit for a 320i
done them myself with oem parts for £250 from germany via ebay...it's a doddle...
it's about the only job on a car other than spark plugs where you only need an allen key and one spanner

Koi Tax discussions might be forbidden on here, but ///M Tax is worse.
Headlight self-levelling adjuster brackets on BMW's are made of tin, they corrode and snap. Their purpose is to keep the headlight aim level as you go over bumps and up/down hills so it is essentially a small bracket/rod that connects the suspension to the headlight.
The bracket is almost identical across all models, but the end that mounts to the wishbone is slightly larger on the M models (because the wishbone is thicker)
Normal 3 series BMW part = £12
M3 part = £67
Compare them side by side you can barely tell the difference.

love my 14 plate 335d but probably going to sell it soon, beautiful tourer incredible power but not really the need for it now as not travelling miles to work anymore, thinking about getting something a bit more sensible and all round cheaper but what i have no idea..... had a Mondeo ST for a few years lovely car but fed up with Clanky engines, failing turbo and dual mass fly wheels expense and starter motor !!

i was going to trade mine in this year but probably for the new shape ford focus...
supposed to be a lot better than the previous shape. it's a reasonable price new and even better up to a year old.
and since we're not really going anywhere anymore and having everything delivered due to C19
thiers nearly no point in even having a car anymore....
so i'll leave it until at least next year now...

I got the wife a 3 door 1 series Diesel auto in Estoril Blue (very rare combination - took a year to find one) as a spare car.
You naturally think of them as small cars but they drive and feel like a big car.
Plenty powerful enough, there are sections of the powerband where the M3 struggles to maintain distance when following it.
Fuel economy is pretty good, claimed at 66mpg but maybe that's unrealistic, but then I'm no judge because I've never really owned a car that can better 20mpg.
Overall its been a brilliant little car, servicing consists of an oil and air filter change and not much else. Tyres are pricey if you stick with run flats and buy the top tyres (about £200 a corner for Michelin Pilot Sports, but comes down to £70 a corner for budget ditch finders).
And the look of it grows on you quite a bit over time.
Definitely a good buy as a 2nd car or a runaround.
