Need the Koi to keep em sane lol ...
Its been a while for me, started early 1990 when it was still BR and got finished the end of 2006 because they didn't like the old staff with decent contracts / terms and conditions. Went self employed for ten years doing this and that and eking out a living up north, miss the rail in some ways but not the endless changes / foisting of responsibility downwards onto the lads on track. My nerves were shot some days just doing coss as the sites / planned method of working rarely matched the reality when you got there.

Didn't mind day rate job with the big machines or the nights shifts just used to laugh at them running about scream give me the line back we need the line back lol . Hated price jobs they always seemed to have shite access. Many a time I've fell down the banks with the spray pack on my back full of blue dye for the spy trains with all the gaffers on ended up looking like a bloody smurf

Ha Ha.. some dodgy bankings for sure... best night shifts were as handsignaller putting protection out for possession and picking it up at the end... detonators down.. head down.. and be ready to go if they needed to put a train through. Ok, you were first on and last off but an easy night while the lads were grafting.

Envro work was canny like but some times got more paperwork than it was worth when the line ran parallel with the waterway with about 8/10m between them

With the H&S and general complexities of rail, it takes me longer to plan the job than it takes you guys to go out and deliver it!
Been doing 12+ hour days for the last 12 weeks to plan a programme of work that was supposed to start Sunday. Whole programme got cancelled on the first night because the train wouldn't start. Major electrical failure, needs to be shipped to Germany for repair. We'd paid almost 200k in hire fees just to secure exclusive use of it and had it sitting in a siding doing nothing for 6 weeks so it would be ready to start the work.
But speaking of H&S, a few of the old school fellas were talking about how they used to collect up the asbestos dust and make snowballs out of it to throw around in the tunnels at break time. They explained how you'd mould it into a ball then lob it at someone which would hit them on the head and explode into a big cloud of asbestos dust!Last edited by RS2OOO; 19-01-2021 at 03:13 PM.

Sounds like not a lot has changed re machinery... always breaking. Tampers and engineering trams were the worst culprits. I remember a nightshift in Wales hand signalling trains bang road whilst the tamper was working, it of course had to break down.. I was due on a Ferry to France for my hols the next day.. was fair panicking as the shift over ran lol.
Asbestos snowballs.. doesn't surprise me too much not as bad but we used to play a mean game of cricket with tin cans in the main corridor of the old Lune Road works in Lancaster, it would be all jagged and torn and the corridor made it much more interesting due to limiting where you could run to

Agree about tampers, always a liability.
This machine was a schweerbau grinder.

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
