i would only use barrels that have held food grade liquid, orange juice concentrate ect...not cleaning chemicals.
afaik all plastics have some capacity however small, to adsorb liquids so it could leech out.
myself i've used the clear plastic storage boxes before, for top up reservoirs and for water changes.
anything from 20-100 litres plus. and they're plenty cheap from pound stretcher or B&M ect....

Evaporation seems massive at the moment because there is no lid

do you have a large difference between tank temp and room temp?
my 500+ ltr one used to lose a lot, but adjusting the temp has it down at maybe a ltr in a few weeksthe slow pond build thread

I didn't think so tank is at 25 and room is bouncing at the moment as we have a coal fire as sol heating for house so is on 24 7. Haven't got a room thermometer tho tbf. Losing about a 1 to 2 liters a day but tank is only 100 liters

no leaks or spaces happening? the beauty of salt water is easy to spot leaks as the salts left behind, as that seems a lot, and unless your getting all that moisture drawn up the chimney, have you now condensation on walls or windows?
clean film works as a temp cover and there's plenty of acrylic dealers on line, can even get it delivered with corners rounded and a air/feeding hole inthe slow pond build thread

Thought about acrylic lid so now that you've said it I'll look in to that. The only condension I've noticed is the upstairs far corner couldn't be more far apart if I tryed and no sign of leaks I check every sort of hoping I find one so I know why

the damp could well be from the tank and other daily house use, its going to come out on the coldest spot,
my set ups been unusual since mid summer, heater I think died then, and its been without ever since, corals news etc all still growing and reproducing and doing fine, same with the wave maker, it needed a new bearing as I went to work and for some reason not replaced and with just a return pump from sump running all is fine.
its also run with only top ups and no water changes for at least 4 years, the slow pond build thread

its very easy to run, the less you mess with it and stick hands in etc the more stable it runs,
the first few months while it cycles and you get diatom blooms etc are a bit frustrating, the slow pond build thread

Gotta says it's a nice change from cold water. Am running fish only at the moment but once I get to grips with it all I would like to move in to corals maybe back end of year but we ll say anit cheap but beautiful. Little legs wants a sand shifting star next and a couple hermits

your tank wont be ready for a sand sifter for a long time yet, or your just going to watch it slowly die
you did not add CUC when sdetting it up?
zoas and mushrooms are dead simple, though just need to be wary of palytoxinthe slow pond build thread

Got a blood red shrimp and 2 tiny tiny clowns won't even be the size of a little finger nail. I'll bear that it mind mate thank you need to change the lights and that to coral first. Ah they didn't tell is that in the shop they were going to let me get the star as first fish!!

my retailer would ask how old the set up is, before adding a critter that needs an established sandbed.
have fun with the clowns, they will ensure you dont stick your hands in, fiesty little fellas, the dominate one will soon enough become female and have a growth spurt and keep the male in check. they were sold in a shop that small?the slow pond build thread

Yeah said they were the smallest that they had had for a good while starting to lose faith in every shop around my way now like. I kown its a business but they seem to just be seeing pound signs and anything else...... thinking of a damsel and a gobie?

you need a shoal of damsels or they stress and a few as they naturally bully each other, gobies are fun, some clowns gobys (not worth getting if going down sps route, as will sit on them) and sand sifters are fun

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
