shpeel says it's a german brand, the ingredients look a bit different,
the price isn't bad but i still think it's a bit close to saki prices to be a field tester for them
maybe when it's had 10 years results and won awards with fish at shows...
plus coppens being german and the only koi food manufacurer in the EU i know of....

It seems to be quite popular but to me it is still not cheap,£120 for 15kg.

Have to see how it fairs out.

IIRC Koi can only take a max of 37% of protein in their diet (as they've evolved with a varied diet). Any more and it's usually passes through and becomes additional waste/proteins to be skimmed off.

32-35%+treats is probably a good compromise - a solid base growth but then a varied boost.

Most of the growth feeds are around 45%.

The next question is what type of protein - I suspect that fish-originated and insect proteins are easier to digest for koi rather than animal such as chicken or other non-aquatic animal proteins.

Hakari Gold is 35% protein minimum. From memory Medikoi probiotic is 37% but animal-originated meal.

Mine wander around the pond snacking on snails and insect larvae too.

I think fishmeal is the ideal protein source for foods, white fishmeal being the best but don't quote me on that.

That's correct and you can quote me on that because Advanced Koi Nutrition is one of the courses I teach for Koi Organisation International.

I certainly will mate. It’s amazing how much some companies change for their product and how they can justify the cost, but of course at the end of the day they are in business to make money and if people are willing to pay that sort of money they will keep charging it.

white fish meal is better than standard fishmeal,
there's also a whole different level once you come away from sand eels that the Europe uses.
and use sardine fishmeal and other more nutritional fishmeals available in Japan and Australia.

I think the guy at JPD was doing some food with a very high quality fishmeal from Australia.

What would the ideal ingredients be for a koi food? I was looking into making my own pellets the other day out of curiosity and was thinking ingredients wise of something along the following:

    White fish meal
    Krill meal
    Spirulina
    Wheat bran

I didn't know what else after this but maybe salmon oil? I was wondering if you could make it yourself and save a load of money with control of what goes in, but lose a lot of time in return!
