    Nishikoi food

I would not normally consider this food but I have some garden vouchers that I dont know what to spend on and a garden centre is giving a 50 % discount on this food. I have always regarded this food as the better of the lower end, putting it above kockney koi just wondered other peoples opinion on the food.
I only have a 1600 gal pond and due to this I don't feed a lot or aim for spectacular growth. I have used many foods in the past such as Hikari, JPD, Orchird fisheries and not really seen much of a difference as I only have Israeli koi and you cant make a silk purse out of a sows ear LOL
    Any Thoughts
    Ian

I tried it once about 15 years ago.

I didn't think it was very good and don't know whether its improved or not since then.

If you are getting it dirt cheap or free I guess you could mix the pellets alongside a quality food just to save some money without too much detriment to the fish.

The one thing I did like about it was the strong buckets / tubs it came in back then. I still use one of the tubs (for other foods) to this day.

    Hi Ian

like you , I`ve tried most the foods , including a couple of seasons on Saki Hikari , and not noticed a huge difference in the koi . I`m happy using the Nishikoi food , to be honest . I didnt like the Coppens , as it coloured the water and I found MediKoi left a lot of waste . I couldnt justify keeping on with the Saki , as I wasnt seeing much benefit for the extra money .

Ive been using the Nishikoi Pro , this year , but that seems to colour the water , so I think I`ll go back to the growth next year , which hasnt given me any issues when Ive used it .
Anyway , Im in Lancashire too - so if you end up buying it and dont like it , we may be able to do a deal !

Which garden centre is it , by the way ? Might have a look .

    I should add,

One thing I did notice about the Nishigoi food, which may or may not still be the case, was its price / weight ratio.

This 1250g tub for example is £20.45 (£24.44 including delivery - and that's with £13 off RRP):

    https://www.swelluk.com/nishikoi-gro...g-small-pellet

That's £19.55 per KG (inc. postage).

A 15kg sack of Saki Balance floating is £159 including free delivery (might have gone up slightly now).

That's £10.60 per KG (inc. postage).

Even if you are buying at half price, it may not be the bargain it first seems, and absolutely will not come close to the quality of the Saki food.

Continuing the above theme but trying to level the playing field.....

10kg of Nishigoi food is £90 after a £60 discount:

    https://www.swelluk.com/nishikoi-gro...g-large-pellet

The equivilent weight of Saki would work out at £106 when calculated per KG from a 15kg bag.

So even then the Saki is only 10% more expensive, despite the Nishigoi food being advertised with 33% off.

And continuing the theme just for some fun.....

These tubs of Tetra Pond Sticks weigh 140 grams:

    https://aquazone-shop.co.uk/shop/tet...8aAjf3EALw_wcB

Works out at £49.78 per Kg, or £746.78 for 15Kg, compared to Saki Balance at £159 for 15kg.

Its complete madness when you really drill down into it but the big commerical companies really know how to market stuff - which is why it is advertised by volume and not by weight.

Tried a tub of the Tetra pond sticks - probably over 20 years ago - absolute rubbish for the fish IMO, anyhow the slightly used tub got left outside, sealed with lid on and forgotten about. In fact it disappeared only to be found many years later, still sealed with lid and tub in tact - in a foxes hideout, they must have stolen it, maybe liked the smell, but couldn't even be arsed to open it

i think ricky covered nishigoi and cheaper koi foods quite well,
and as RS said, work out the price per KG and it's not a lot more by comparision...
tetra pond sticks in a small container worked out at £27.93 per kg

I am working out the same thing 3mm for my Byer tosai and working out price by the kg, so cheaper to buy a sack.
It's hard to find high protein for a good price

Is that for the Saki Growth or Balance , RS ? Cheapest I could find the growth was £13/kg , compared with the Nishikoi at £9/kg . The Saki balance I found for £11.50/kg compared with Nishikoi staple at £7/kg .

Saki prices I quoted were for Balance at £159.00

But at this Weekends All England Show Shosha Koi were selling 15kg of Saki Balance for £153 which is the cheapest I've ever seen it. I actually paid slightly more and grabbed myself 15kg of Saki Balance R to try out.

If your not so bothered with the saki germ bacteria...

you can get hikari staple £6.65/kg and hikari friend £4.79/kg

or JPD foods Shogun £8.90/kg , yamato nishiki colour food £7.89/kg, and fujiyama staple £5.90/kg

I've greatly reduced the amount of food this year and my fish are still growing well...
