Could try the floss and water changes mate, get some of that Catfish pellets 2mm sinking though they go crazy for it and 53% protein.

That and Daphnia I use now along with mussels for the wee ones.

Really filled the tank out now all different sizes and eating loads about 6 times a day.
The drum is brilliant no cleaning though I do put some floss in the top of the shower and that lasts a couple of weeks,so maintenance free

Yours must be getting big now,how many did you get?

Yeah had the same mate think I might keep the system running when I move the fry on with some am keeping till the day before the new ones turn up take them out decent water change and see if that makes any difference. Enjoying it and as you say massive learning curve just a bit frustrated at colours and losses with setup behind all problems but onwards and upwards I hope lol .

Brown is usually tanins which are way smaller than most filter media - reverse osmosis is about the only way to remove. Released by colorants and breakdown by food, poop and things like leaves.

That was my first thought poop leaves ect but since going to bd there is nothing on the floor . Purge bd every week with filter management all seems clear leaving only the food as a route to all evil .

Food would the the other reason. The previous food turned the water in the old pond brown within a couple of feeds.

    Activated Carbon,
I used it on my old pond a few times,
it removes most chemical treatments after use, and virtually anything that taints the water.
plus it will help remove pheromones and lots of other organic molecules.

thats all i did, some where with high flow.
i'm thinking of using it again with some other tricks but thinking of using a separate reactor instead.
as it's not really removing large quanities of anything...

I had exactly the same problem as you AJ.

I was fiddling about with my autofeeder and realised a few days later I'd been dumping much more pellet into my grow on tank than I had anticipated. The pellets I'm using are Coppens Grower 3mm.

Water went really murky and brown and I got a brown foam on the water too. I changed the settings on the auto feeder so only a few were dropping in, and about a week or so later it cleared on its own, with only a small water change in between to help things along.

So it might resolve itself with a bit of time, especially if you've now changed to Wheatgerm.

Filter floss in front of both pond returns and in the skimmer helped me, had the same issue....i have now changed to Aqua source 50/50 which does not seem to taint the water as much as the Coppen mixes did..... agree with Djstiles as well on this matter as i still have the slightly tainted water i think a protein skimmer will defo help as my water is more of a yellow/brown tinge which points to protein so i am told....
