total fish length is a poor judge for feeding imo,
    weight is a better marker.

in an ideal world...if your looking for maximum growth, you can edge temp a little higher say 23-24C, your filtration will cope, and your fish will eat it, this is a target i'm slowly working towards,
as a maximum in summer/autumn i'd say up to 3% of body weight A DAY!

    so assuming 50cm a fish at 2.2kg x 8 fish = about 0.5kg a day.....that's a lot of food...

but you need big filters to cope with that, and i'm not sure mine would be able to cope either...
most will need to stop before getting to that level due to raised ammonia levels.... or stringy unproccessed poo from poorly digested food

there is no 'rule' as far as i know, it's all about what you want to try to achieve, and filters can actually cope with.
and i'd only attempt that for 5-6 months of summer/autumn.

i'm currently feeding about 1% a day, as new pond and filters still have a long way to go until mature....

That's a lot of food I'm currently feeding about 130 grm per day my filters are new pond only being built this year and I've done what I think is a slow and steady approach with the stocking I'll turn the heater up a notch once my covers are on and try and up the feed to around 200/230 a day and see how I fair this is all trial and error for me at the minute I am trying to get them going I have been told my system would cope with about 20 fish but I was planning more around 10 to maximise growth

I wouldnt push feeding in the first year,
filters need time to become robust and adaptable.
That level of maturity takes time.
Push too hard too fast and you could create problems...

As I said I'm new to all this so 166 grams would be 1% so would you advise uping to this level and holding it there also would you recommend that I keep the temp in the 20s all winter and keep feeding to keep filters running at full level or cool it off if so when and how long for thanks

    imo there's no one answer
and a couple of thousand different ways and ideas on how to keep koi...

i heated to 20C all winter in my first year with mainly tosai,
    heated last winter 15C
this year i'm not heating at all jan-march.

i had valid reasons for the different strategies at the time,
but would probably do them differently now as i learn more.

i think it's a personal descision, as there are hundreds of variables,
one persons idea of keeping koi is not the same as another yet both can get good results...
from mike snaden to peter waddington, vastly different ideas. both have had good results...

you can carbon copy someone elses ideas and get nowhere,
because ponds are different, fish are different, filterhouses are different ect...
you need to just research as many different ideas, and divise a strategy to suit your pond.
