    Coppens OSW Vs Medikoi Health

    Hi guys,

As the title suggests, I want someone who has fed both foods to give me their opinion of how the Coppens stuff stacks up to Medikoi.

A year or so ago a few people on here told me about the Queni koi food and that they thought it was excellent, so I tried it (don't remember which one exactly as they make loads of varieties), but the fish weren't really interested in it so a lot got wasted and what did get eaten seemed to just pass straight through them.

I have fed Medikoi now for many years and love it, the fish love to eat it, they grow well and stay healthy, and LITERALLY nothing comes out of their back ends.

But unfortunately we are feeding 10kg a month at the moment and at £85 a tub, I'm looking for an alternative. I appreciate you pay for quality, but there isn't £85 of anything in fish food.

Also, if anyone has fed those two and the Cuttlebrook food, I'd appreciate that included in the reply.

    Thank in advance guys,

    Jason

I cant give you a direct comparison, but im presently feeding OSW. Chris Masters is selling Hikari gold at £80 for 10kg. If he was local i would be feeding Hikari..Im not knocking OSW,but In my opinion, having used both,Hikari Gold is superior in all aspects

Hmmmm, im hoping OSW is as good as a lot of people think, as I've just ordered some.

I love Medikoi, but the price is getting prohibitive now, especially as they are steadily eating more food, so that 10kg will soon only last a few weeks.

    Fingers crossed.

I've never fed Hikari, but always heard good things about it. I think I'm right in saying at one point it was stopped from entering the country.

I also saw that Evolution Aqua have their own food too, as I really trust their products I think their food would be worth trying.

    Thanks for the reply,

    Jason

Other than Hikari, a lot of foods available all come out of the same factory and are essentially the same ingredients and either Fish meal based, or as is becoming more common now, insect meal based.

You are correct about Hikari being very difficult to obtain for a few years. There has been times where I've had doubts over Hikari foods with my fancy Goldfish but nothing conclusive.

I fed Medikoi Growth for 1 year and to be honest didn't see much growth.

The next year I fed Saki Growth, and saw a lot of growth and the Koi definitely loved it, but its pricey.

This year I'm feeding Coppens Top Koi, and am yet to see the results in the main pond, but the fry were on it exclusively from last September till April and nobody can deny that 35cm Koi at 11 Months old is very good growth, but I'm keeping an open mind on it till the end of the season in the main pond.

I suppose I'm like everyone and want everything for nothing. I just think that's crazy money as I can get 10kg of chicken breast for £38, so £85 is a joke.

Anyway, I took the plunge and ordered 15kg of OSW yesterday from Cooke's, they are currently warning that delivery could take 14 days, it arrived this morning. So 12 hours. Amazing service, under promise and over deliver.

So I'll be mixing it in with my remaining Medikoi and hoping for the best.

I don't go for growth as that doesn't bother me, but on the Medikoi health my fish are all two years old now, all bought at 4 -6" and are minimum 16" but have 3 at 24", so I'm good with that sort of growth. I've got a lemon Hariwake that I bought at 4" four weeks ago, that was stick thin, that is now 8" and has easily doubled in height/thickness, it's got a huge hump and belly, it looks like it's going to be a massive fish, I've NEVER seen growth like it.

My god, has anyone looked on Coppens website, they do everything feed related.

They are a Dutch company and their products are made in Germany. Is it wrong that these two facts make me trust the products.

Unfortunately I don't think it's Medikoi, as the fish I bought with it is still scrawny, although that has put some length on as well.

I made the switch from Medikoi Probiotic to JPD Yamato Colour.

    1. The size of the pellets. The Yamato pellets are 7mm the Medikoi are 6mm. However they're about 4 times the volume - the JPD is physically larger and so the fish had to adapt.
    2. The pond water colour has browned. I'm unsure if this is due to the food but the colour of the water is murkier than the Medikoi.
    3. The drum is triggering more often. I suspect more waste through the fish.
    4. Higher protein in the Medikoi.
    5. I would say the colour condition was better earlier in the season with Medikoi. The JPD is ok but not quite as shiny.

I think Medikoi is perhaps better than the JPD. However Probiotic is in the £50-60 for 3 kg vs £30-40 for 5 kg.

    Nick,

Thanks for that reply, I fear I might get the same results, but we'll soon see.

Insects are very nutritious, usually around 50% protein, much higher than any animal sources. There is talk of us all eating them as a cattle alternative. Lots of people around the world already do. I don't think I'd have any problem with it if it was formed into something pleasant looking.

It inst pleasant looking at all. has a very off fish smell due to the high trimethylamine.

the whole purpose was to increase protein content of food, mainly for dogs where certain people didnt agree with feeding dogs meat

i used Medikoi probiotics and had minimal waste and reasonable growth but had brown water........ fish liked it, changed to OSW for cost purposes etc seeing good results in growth and condition and water does not seem to brown as much but is slightly tainted but minimal.....

Thing is it's difficult to say w.r.t to brown water - I have a natural pond that has had plants for over 7 years..

Smartin, thanks for your reply, hopefully I have the same results. So far they have been on it 24h and they are literally hunting for it, and all my fish instead of just certain ones, which is great for me. The food is eaten in seconds rather than minutes.

Freddy, you've eaten far worse mate.

Well I was reading a thread in here about OSW and decided to take the plunge and got myself 2kg to test it. I normally feed Medikoi Probiotic Growth over the summer months.
I found that my fish (fussy little devils) did not like the OSW so I had to revert back to the Medikoi, which they are far happier with.

It guess it is down to what your fish will take and what you want to spend.

Definitely doesn't matter about the quality of they don't like it, I know plenty of people who would rather have a burger than a piece of fillet steak.

Luckily our fish are going crazy for the OSW, I've never seen them like it before, they fly up to the food and it's gone in seconds, and they linger under the feeder before it feeds, fish that aren't usually that bothered are pushing other fish out of the way.

I don't know about waste at the moment as they are all eating blanket weed as well, all there waste looks green.

Hoping it's as good as it seems.

I found it was a test of wills.

I mixed the remaining medikoi with the Yamoto. It took them about a week to finally make the move. It normally takes this before they start taking different food (same for the winter/summer).

They now happily eat it but I think the water quality has suffered - not the stats but the the filter triggers more. They have eaten more volume wise as the pellets are larger. Even the green tench will take it.

For over winter I will probably work back to medikoi wheatgerm as I've found this to work and the pack lasts all winter - I don't feed mine much at all over the winter months. Only if they are milling around actively looking for food which may be one every couple of weeks.
