Pretty sure that was not the case but I do think waste was being produced faster than the filters could remove it at one point, therefore creating a long "dwell time" of waste in contact with the water.

Ha ha. He's not speaking to me since I questioned why one of his customers was using Nexus on a 10,000 gallon pond!

He told me my Nexus fines were because I'd set it up wrong.

I still regularly think about that chag of yours, just that I really want a female. The Koi are so healthy and settled I might wait till next year before getting one now as I don't want to upset the balance in the pond before winter.... Unless a stunning female chag turns up at a bargain price!

I hate the fines that the Nexus let's through. I usually have a 400 micron filter sock in the centre port, this massively reduces fines but needs cleaning daily, which I'm too lazy to do.

RS, I've just been sent ingredients lists for Coppens Grower and Top Koi. The Grower is like most foods now, including the Medikoi, it has wheat based ingredients as its first ingredients, but the Top Koi has Fish Meal as its first ingredient, so it's a massively good quality food if the ingredients list is to be believed.

I've looked at quite a few different foods since starting this discussion and even the top brands are all wheat based now.

The fish meal in Coppens foods is gradually being phased out and replaced with insect meal.

Next year I'm going to feed Saki Balance through the summer to see if it reduces the amount of waste and water staining. The high waste might just be due to the koi being bigger and eating more this year, but the amount of mess in the water is unbelievable and the drum is going off every 6 minutes in peak summer.

Hi RS that seems a lot of washes your system is doing in the height of summer, i got mine balanced at every hour resulting in very clear water and good parameters, the only gripe i have is the brown taint in the water which has to be the OSW and the Top Koi food.....i am now using filter wool in two places which has helped with clarity for sure....have not noticed a problem with waste using this food, fish getting fed 3 to 4 times a day with treats in between at times, koi Buffet and mussels.

hi mate cant you lower your sensor probe down lower to give you more time in between washes. mine is kicking in about every 30 minutes high feeding. once food and waste has cleared it reverts back to 45 minutes.
which is what i like it set at. hope your well mate.

i have just been doing some tests on my setup with food on water parameters. Reason every now and then when feeding heavy i get ammonia traces.
food i have been doing tests on are
    queni koi premium growth
    OSW Coppens
    Dried mealworm

when i use Queni Koi premium growth on its own ammonia OK. When i mix it with Dried mealworm Ammonia Trace.
when i use Dried mealworm on its own OK
when i use OSW on its own OK.
when i use OSW and dried meal worm OK

what that is telling me is i won t be mixing meal worm and queni growth again. i thought it was my pond filter maturity. had gone backwards. it has not
its the certain foods that altered the water parameters. i fed even more of the OSW and meal worm. the next day. then i did for the premium grow and mealworm result.
so some people who are getting parameters showing spikes or traces it could be the food. altering things.
    it certainly opened my eyes.

Thanks for this. It is interesting you are seeing the same thing as me with the staining.

I am probably feeding 6 times a day including treats. Average of 200 grams a day which doubles on mussels feeding day!

Can you remind me what drum you have?

    Cheers.

    Hi Fred,

    Agree with both your posts.

I am also seeing ammonia traces a lot more than I'd like to, which is bad at my high pH. This is when feeding the Top Koi (and mealworms) which I think is the same food as the Queni premium growth food. This is despite having 76 litres of K1 in Nexus plus 23 anoxic baskets. In theory the Anoxic baskets should be adequate on their own for 13 koi but that is definitely not the case.

To be honest my Nexus could do with being lowered by around 1cm so the drum sits just slightly lower than it is now. I decided doing so was too much work for just 1cm difference.

Water level sits around 1/4 up the draco waste shoot with 20k variable pump at 62% flow, but instructions say it is most ideal at 1/2 way up. However, if I did lower it 1cm it would be half way up when pump is running but would overflow down waste shoot when pump is off because as you know the water level runs a bit lower than the pond when pump is on.

Funnily enough I did lower the probe yesterday which now has it cleaning every 12 to 13 minutes during the day time, but on Draco instructions it says to avoid having probe too low as it puts extra pressure on the drum screen and also forces some dirt through the mesh.

Because I don't have the additional benefits a shower brings (and cannot install one) I've been wondering whether I should consider a bigger drum and separate bio, but they are just so expensive to buy, and maybe when I change the food the problem might fix itself with less waste.

Wow, reading your post about feeding 200g a day RS, made me wonder what I feed. As mentioned at the start of this thread, I was feeding 10kg in a little less than a month, but now I'm using the Coppens I've upped it a little, and have just worked out feeding just short of 400g a day. I didn't realise it was anything like that as I've never worked it out before. The fish get fed through my fish mate auto feeder between 6am and 11pm, and get feeds around every 35mins.

I think I've got about 22 fish, most are around 16", but got a few at 24" and two at 30" and then got a two naff little metallic ones that don't grow, prob 10" or so, and then three babies who are growing like the clappers.

They were milling around the top looking for their 'feeder' today with the warm temps.. so I'm going to have to arrange some new food. Finished the JBB so temped to simply go Medkoi this year.
