Can u get lost colour back ?
Hi just wondering if you can get the colour back on koi once they’ve lost it. I have a couple of Mature Kohaku thatve lost 99.9% but was told a colour enhancing food might get it bk ? I’m a bit sceptical so thought I’d ask

In my experience, this has happened with one of my Kohaku and others with more experience advised me at the time that once beni has gone, that’s most likely it.
I personally wouldn’t hold out much hope but you never know.

I would've thought colour disappearing completely or almost completely (rather than just reducing in intensity) is a genetic issue rather than a water hardness/quality issue.
Which if that is the case, I can't see that any amount of clay or colour enhancing foods would bring back the colour.
Mind you they will help your other fish, so no harm in trying I suppose.

I have seen similar things happen in the natural world - but only in the film "Cocoon"

Next you'll be saying you had a lizard that changes colour, looks like it's wearing mittens and it's eyes move independently from each other oh yes and it's got a very long tongue lol

Thx guys - I’m learning loads on here with your help . Interesting that GH affects colour as e’re in an area with v high GH - is there a way to soften the water ? Bearing in mind tho that my pond holds in excess of 20k gallons

You may need to look at an RO system possibly but as you have a lot of water to deal with you may need a big RO system to cope? There is a section on here for RO topics so maybe worth a look on there. Or maybe give Mankey Sanke a PM as he's the one to speak to water chemistry wise. He's a really helpful bloke so definitely give him a try first if the RO section doesn't help.

In my experience Beni will not return once lost, I am not sure if anyone knows exactly why, but it is a mixture of genetics, hard water, and water quality ie healthy fish. as been said above.
But this might help.....Sorry..i'll get my coat !!DSC01192 (Large).JPG

You'd be better off using one of these than that pen -

I believe if colour disappears (i.e loses colour into a white background) it won't come back. Except Sumi of course.
But if the colour changes when transferring from soft to hard water, or from inside to outside it can be reversed if you put the fish back into soft water or move it back inside.

Think I agree once it goes there not really much chance of it returning, and if it does it’s weak looking like secondary Hi.

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
