Good shout Anne, Home bargains do 1 kg for about £8 but b and m do a bucket.
Meal worms for birds is fine as your not paying the koi tax.

D'ster feed the mealworms as an additional feed,I normally feed them in the evening just try a few to start with till they get used to them.

Mussels I break in two so they get an even share, get mine from Asda frozen ready cooked and just put in a jug of pond water to defrost then feed, they go crazy for them and get them most days in summer.
    John

Sometimes I am awestruck when feeding mealworms.

Shy koi (males) who grab a mouthful of pellets and swim off are suddenly completely tame when mealworms are on offer. Some of the females will lift themselves out of the water to be first to get some. They will even try to reach the tub when it's on the side of the pond.

If I have a koi who's off colour and has lost appetite that's when I do the mealworm test.... Never had one yet that didn't suddenly perk up when mealworms went in.

Went and picked some meal worms up from a pet shop today, £180 for 80g. They didn’t go to mad for them, but probably will once they get used to them👍
I know carp love crushing the hard shell of fresh water mussels to get inside but wander why they like sea mussels 🤔
