Feeding Frenzy
I thought I’d show a couple of videos before the covers go on this weekend to show my efforts in reducing the violence that occurs when the feeder goes off. I added five new fish this year, which despite being smaller, have turned out to be quite aggressive feeders. The frenzy when feeding has caused some shyer fish to back off and not get enough food and I also worry that a koi will get injured or even flip over the wall. I mixed in a little sinking food, but I don’t want them getting too reliant on bottom feeding, so I also added an air stone to try and distribute the food on the surface over a wider area. I think I got a good balance.

Some lovely looking Koi there mate, especially liked what I think was the 3 step Kohaku.
My first fear was that one would end up over the edge of the pond. My pond is covered all year round but I remove covers during the day when at home in the summer and had 2 occasions where Koi ended up on the capping. One jumped while feeding when nudged by another Koi, and a 2nd Koi that often nudges the cover when expecting food but one day with the cover off she came completely out and onto the capping. Both found their own way back in but gave me a fright.
No doubt about it if I didn't have the mesh covers at least one would have been out by now (my Showa jumped out twice in a week but that's another story) and I know this because of the big mesh shaped gash in his head that still hasn't fully healed 11 Months later.
