Quen Koi Food
This year, I switched from qk ultimate mix to qk ultimate koi, and I couldn’t be happier. With five new additions to the pond, I’ve been feeding heavier than I have ever before, and unlike the ultimate mix, there is no problem with brown water, the extra k1 I added browned up very quickly, and ammonia/nitrite have been a very stable zero.
I still have water at 22°C while I finish the last couple of kilos, and with no covers yet, it’s starting to get expensive, but as I drop the temperature, I need to start with their winter diet. Last year I mixed some sinking food with the ultimate mix, but the ultimate koi’s protein level is too high (49%). The qk Japan mix has a protein level on par with the wheat germ, 38%, and is apparently a mix of sinking and floating. This could be my ideal winter food.
I know some on here feed jap mix, so can anyone confirm that a percentage sinks?
thanks
Mark

Hi Mark, I to have used the Ultimate mix and even though a very good food it browned the water so switched to the premium growth this year with no problems and excellent growth as they love it and I love the price.
Going to your question Mark,I have used Japmix in the past and yes it does have some slow sinking in it.
Not sure of the percentage but some definitely sinks.
At the moment trying the osw and so far very pleased with it.John

i'm using the japmix in 3mm and 6mm
The sinking pellets are easily identifiable by colour and shape,
but the ratio is low, i'd say less then 5% probably more like 2-3%
more just to help with the odd shy fish not competing with the others for food i think.

i need to get some more food soon as i'm nearly out...
looking at 15kg of QKoi Japmix or the coppens OSW as they're both from coppens anyway...and about the same price...
15kg would last all year for me, but would probably look at mixing it with coppens top koi or QKoi ultimate koi in summer.
the only difference i can see from relevent pictures is the ratio of coppens orange, spirulina, and wheatgerm
are about equal (33%) each in OSW @ 40% protein and higher Astaxanthin at 27 mg/kg
OSW
and the Jap mix looks visually to have a higher ratio of wheatgerm (40%?) with a few (4%?)sinking wheatgerm pellets.
which would account for the slightly lower protein content @ 38% and lower Astaxanthin at 9mg/kg
JAPAN MIX
QKoi do list a lot of extra vitamins in the japan mix (Vitamins: A IU (IU) 17 300 kg - D3 IU (IU) 2.300 kg E mg / kg 210 - C mg / kg 235 - Dyes: E161j (astaxanthin 9 mg / kg)
Trace elements E1 mg / kg 79 - E2 mg / kg 5.3 - E3 mg / kg 1.0 E4 mg / kg 5.3 - E5 mg / kg 21 - E6 mg / kg 84)
than coppens do though, the only one i can find for coppens in vitamin A inclusion....
does anyone have a complete list of ingredients from the bag of OSW pellets it's self?
this is all i could find...

still wrestling with which pellets to buy...
i wanted OSW and top koi to mix in, but 30kg of pellets would be 2 years worth at current feeding rates...
i also looked at 6mm jap mix i've got and it looks a bit different from stock photo.
seem to be 4 main different pellets plus the odd 4.5mm sinkers.
green spirulina, orange, beige wheatgerm, plus a dark brown pellet.... premium growth?
so might go for a smaller bag of this and maybe add some high protein pellets to it in the summer...
Japan Mix
OSW for comparison

sad things to do on a cold winters night...
counting pellets....
no idea if this is of any use to anyone but i was mildly curious what ratios were in Jap mix before making my choice
only did this a couple of times but results were surprisingly similar.
my reasoning behind this was to use either jap mix or OSW as a year round base mix for variety,
and then add extra wheatgerm pellets in winter or top koi high protein pellets in summer to alter the protein ratio.
given the lower level of colour enhancing pellets i could either add these to jap mix, or just get the OSW...
very roughly on my 2kg tub of 6mm japan mix
30% 6mm wheatgerm? (beige)
30% 6mm growth? (brown)
20% 6mm spirulina? (green)
20% 6mm orange? (orange lol)
3% 4.5mm sinking (beige)
