Thanks for that,
Given me a different perspective.
I might try the top koi or ultimate koi (same thing) in 15kg
Works out cheaper than buying two different feeds in 6kg size

Finally decided on buying 15kg of the Ultimate Koi pellets in 6mm,
there wasn't a lot of difference in price between the Top Koi and Ultimate Koi including delivery.
so decided on Queni Koi's pellets as they are my 'local' shop.
i ordered them for delivery this morning....
i would have waited until they have their 'winter Event' day on the 9th of feb as there is 15% off there own food,
but i'm nearly out of food and want to blend this into whats left to get them used to it.
and i suppose i could have just collected them, but i'm a lazy git and the free postage saved me a tenner in petrol...Last edited by davethefish1; 17-01-2020 at 01:04 PM.

Queni is brilliant. In my opinion on deliveries. I am moving back to jap mix in the spring. I was using that for 3 years. And my fish grew like hell. Good food.
Also use the queni growth.
That website rs put up for meal worm. I bought some. And next day delivery. It was delivered from a hull shop.
Fish love it.

bought a couple of 25ltr buckets with lids for £15 delivered
just makes it easier to store and keep the pellets fresh.
i also peeled off the labels from the sack and put them on the big bucket so i remember whats in there too

Having only just got my pond running and a couple of Koi in there, this thread has come in dead handy as I was looking to get food etc sorted for spring so think I will go for the coppings OSW. I do have a small pot of a version of coppings food from exclusively koi although ideally I need a sinking wheatgerm feed for winter. I have just been feeding the koi a boilie on the warmer days although stopped since the temperature has really dropped. Roll on spring and growth!

just thought i'd make a follow up post,
initially the fish didn't seem very keen on the new ultimate koi pellets, but after a few days were eating them fine,
but not in the same kind of quantity as the Japan Mix.
i put this down to the much higher protein content 38% vs 49% and that the water temp is just 19C so not as warm as mid summer.
one of the reasons i chose to go for a higher protein level was because a couple of the greedier fish seem to be getting fatter as well as bigger.
judging that the higher percentage protein pellet would concequentially have less carbohydrate, as a lot off foods don't state carbohydrate or sugar levels.
though Ultimate koi does, and has a carbohydrate level of 14% including 0.9 grams of which sugars. (assume 0.9 grams based on per 100 grams?)
and Japan mix has 25% carbohydrates including 2.5 grams of sugars.
i think high carb levels would be fine for fish at lower temps that aren't eating as much, as i'd imagine the extra energy from the carbs would help them get through the winter.
but lots of carbs at my higher temps with lots of food going in seems to be making a couple of my fish a bit...well...er... porky
I've also bought a 6kg sack of 6mm colour plus pellets, to cut with the higher protein pellets for the extra astaxanthin,
i'm currently mixing them 2/3rds ultimate koi to 1/3rd Colour Plus.
the ultimate koi has 20mg/kg astaxanthin, colour plus 70mg/kg, but japan mix only 9mg/kg
as i feel the fish have lost some of the intensity of the colouration since feeding japan mix only.
i also put the colour plus in a 25ltr bucket same as the ultimate koi.

All the Coppens foods seem to have suddenly replaced fishmeal and krill with insect meal.
Looked it up on their website and they say insect meal offers identical benefits to fish meal but is much more sustainable.
I suspect fish meal foods are likely to become harder to find in the future, as Coppens seem to make most of the branded foods under licence.
Wonder if Saki will now use the fishmeal as a selling point seeing as they are likely to be one of the very few still using it in the future.
Funny thing is that someone on here was doing a university project on potentially starting a business using insect meal (black fly) based Koi foods.... looks like he hit the nail on the head.
Here's the most recent Coppens brochure. Not sure what "flavoured with insect meal" actually means, but they all have it now:

I just bought 5kg of Top Koi for the first time and going to move the baby koi onto this as their appetites are too big to keep paying for Saki now.

I saw a programme on telly recently about food sustainability.
And they were growing larvae to make insect meal.
As a general protein source.
You'd think that would be hard work but these things were growing so fast they were making tons of the stuff.
And it was far cheaper using a fraction of the space, than farming fish for fishmeal...
I can see that it looks like a more natural diet for fish,
But wonder what the nutrient and amino acid profile is like compared to fish meal...?

Here's part of the answer... a more optimal amino acid profile compared to plant based feeds, but it doesn't directly correlate against the fish meal amino acid profile:

thats a good read about insect meal from coppens.
i'd be a bit concerned about it 'having no adverse effect' just more sustainability though.
i'd like to see it be an improvement in a more natural diet, not a sideways or possibly backwards step.
i'm all for sustainability,
but i'd imagine that koi pellets are only a tiny fraction of the market compared to fish farming.
so i would prefer to see the best ingredients with less focus on cost or sustainability...
as fishmeal has better omega oils and doesn't contain chitin as a carbohydrate, like insect meal and krill meal.
chitin has been said to have a negative effect on food uptake and gut flora in fish.

Sorry if this has already been said, but I suspect the QK Ultimate Koi is Coppens Top Koi.
The photos you posted above look identical to the Top Koi I've just received (which also only comes in 3mm or 6mm).
QK analysis is the same as "some" listings for Coppens Top Koi prior to them moving to insect based foods. (The Analysis changes from batch to batch so there are some small differences depending on where you look).
Queni Ultimate Koi:
Protein 49
Fat 10
Crude fibre 1.0
Ash 10.8%
Astaxanthin: (Don't understand the format its written in)
Vitamin A: IE/Kg: 28000
The Fish Meal based Top Koi was the same as Queni Ultimate, but the insect based Coppens Top Koi is now:
Protein 49
Fat 8
Crude fibre 1.4
Ash 9.5
Astaxanthin (mg/kg) 20
Vitamin A: IE/Kg: 28000

i don't doubt top koi and ultimate koi are basically the same thing
i was going to get top koi but it worked out cheaper for me to get ultimate koi...
order enough quantity and you could probably get a standard batch of top koi customised to your liking.
i think queni add garlic to theirs...not sure on the quantity you'd have to order but it's probably a lot!
a mate used to own a carp bait company,
and he often use to get pellet manufacturers to cusomise a batch with different additives and flavourings for his products.
the base ingredients were exactly the same, but other more expensive additives were included like GLM, CSL, or additives and flavourings from the boilie ranges.
