Interesting read John,
We have two new members in our koi club, one on Mk 2 the other in Mk3 thank God they both met me before starting as they were still about to make huge mistakes! Im not tying to sound big headed! but ive wasted thousands doing it wrong and if I can give sound advise to help a fellow koi keeper I will, I think most of the time it comes down to saving money, personally I wouldn't even bother until you got the money in place, as frustrating as it is, it will be even more frustrating when you run into problems! The only thing I can add is to possibly build it indoors, or at least have an option to be able to make it a room in the winter, it extends your hobby to all year, ambient temp are better and less contamination from the sky above. As for shimmers, we have the softest water probably in the country, and we still get them 😉

Hi, I’ve had my pond bout around a year now. We have 15 small koi’s. But I am finding they keep dieing one by one. They seem to go very depressed, isolate themselves and then don’t move and it’s very upsetting. I’ve brought the testing kits and everything seems fine save for high PH levels. I’ve noticed another of my fish now just floating near the top away from the other fish. It swims off when I approach it. I’ve netted it to check for any signs of injury but cannot see anything. Does anyone have any advice please. Thanks in advance. Lisa

Number 12 is O.K unless Nitrate from tap is higher than pond water

Tips for new koi keepers
Hi PH spikes are not good! That was the problem for there demise of my two fish As some one said parasite problems can be the problem. I have been keeping koi for 25 years. And I keep a closed eye on water parameters. But watched the PH spike to 8 then 8.5
One by one my koi developed ulcers quite quickly 4 out of 12 fish developed issues.
It was found to be rain water causing it. As soon as I prevented that rain water run off and entering the pond. The PH balance was stable at 6.5 to 7 and fish are very happy for the last 6 months.
A lesson learned even after 25 years.

Yes that’s spot on. PH spike was the demise of two out of 12 fish. Ulcers develops very quickly and Rainwater gain was found to be the issue. Stop rainwater entering your pond and buffer / soften the water. I use bicarbonate soda. Take care chaps

Haven't read through so apologise if this is already here.
Always have a pot of blanket weed treatment in date and to hand so you can get on top of it before it takes over.
I made this mistake last year and spent many many days picking it out my filter culminating to the size of a football ever single day.

it's not just the magnification thats important, generally 40x to scan a slide for flukes ect... but up to 400x for an I.D. at times.
but having good quality features like iris control, and a mechanical slide stage is a must as well.
there are fractionally cheaper microscopes out there, but the baseline standard is an apex practitioner.
plus they always sell well secondhand, as you will see by how few are ever for sale at one time
you can go more expensive... binocular optics, minigrab camera, but for your own use and not posting pictures on forums i find the apex all i need.

Disaster. Started with an existing pond with a pump fed filter. The wind caught my pond cover which hit the pump off the filter and pond emptied overnight. I’d positioned my pump above the bottom in case it became disconnected but still only one fish survived. Definitely considering gravity fed for the new year.
