Pond Cover Help...
Now it's time for the poly covers to come off I need some ideas on a summer cover/net? I have a small pond of 2.4m square made from railway sleepers, last year I draped a tight net over it but was still struck by a heron attack..... Killing a fish through the net. I then raised the net by draping it over some rocks placed around the sleeper edge. It became a bit of a pain to access the pond having to make sure the net was securely fastened and tight etc. Would like some kind of cover I could just lift off and replace with no hassle a bit like the poly covers. Thought of maybe 3 2x2 frames covered with some 1inch square welded mesh(PVC coated) anybody have some better ideas? Over
to you guys. Thanks Steve.

Have you thought about a electric fence instead
I mentioned on another thread , a mate had a net over his pond .he watch a heron land an step on the net an walked out to the middle an sank down on the net an picked some fish off
I use a electric fence as herons nest not too far away

I am under a heron flight path & have used light wooden frames covered
in windproof/greenhouse shading netting successfully for several years.
This is finer than your current netting & will camouflage fish movement &
provide shade in hot sunny weather.

I did think about the electric fence idea but our dog might object lol..... Green house shading sounds interesting, just seen some fibreglass woven insect screen on amazon.... Not sure of it would be strong enough?

I haven't found any solution other than to use mesh or netting covers. My pond is kidney shaped about 5.4 metres x 2.9 meters at the widest point. I also wanted covers easy to take off and relatively light-weight.
So, I got a blacksmith to make a 10mm steel rod frame in 2 sections shaped exactly to fit snugly inside the york-stone capping at the top of the pond. He then put a number of lugs spaced evenly round the edge so the covers rest on the edge of the pond. In this way you see as little as possible of the framework.
It was a tricky assignment because there was no easy way to make a template to create the actual shape of the pond. In the end he decided to make it on site using a large crimping tool to bend the rods little by little. It worked well. I then used black garden netting (like used on fruit cages) to cover the frames fixing it with small black garden ties.
I'd still much prefer not to have a cover, but I dare not risk a heron taking our fish.
Hope that helps a bit?
