All we ever wanted was everything,
All we ever got was cold,
Get up, eat jelly, sandwich bars and barbed wire,
Squash every week into a day.

Koi's Law isn't exclusive to fish-keeping, it's infectious and can affect other parts of your life.
Last night whilst I was catching up on a couple of TV programmes, I'd recorded earlier, in my "den" (alright our front room), my wife casually announced; "The freezer has gone up to -9C."
The time was midnight!
We've a tall Bosch fridge/freezer.
One advantage of this machine is that it has a big digital temperature display for both the fridge and the freezer at the top which you can read from the other side of the kitchen, without opening a door. There's also an audible alarm, if either temperature drops below that at which you've set it, but you have to be in the kitchen to hear it!
This has happened before. My wife orders a lot of meat products on line. So after a delivery it's sometimes very full, so much so, I bought a small back-up freezer which we keep in the tea-house, for anything she can't get in the main freezer.
Unfortunately, she's a tendency to over-fill it (without me realising it, she'd had a delivery a couple of days before) so I found that it was one solid block of products and the fan at the back couldn't circulate the air and the thing had iced up, despite having an auto defrost cycle.
So the usual routine had to be instigated. Clear the lot out, put what would fit in, in the back-up freezer and the rest in freezer bags put out on the patio.
Then unscrew the panel inside at the back of the freezer compartment and defrost the elements with a hairdryer. This only takes about half an hour, but then the temperature reads +18c instead of -18c and you have to wait until it gets down to about -10c, before you can rely on the fact that the sodding thing is actually working. We finally got everything sorted by around 3.00am.
Needless to say, I've had to insist she doesn't fill the drawers so that stuff is jammed up against the underside of the drawer above. But I won't hold my breath."The information's out there,

Sounds a nightmare! Go veggie like me - seems to be less to freeze for some reason.

Whatever the annual inflation rate, products with the word "koi" in them will increase in price annually, by many times that rate.
NT Labs pellets have increased 9% in price compared to the same time last year."The information's out there,

My winter PondExpert 8000ltr submersible pump in the pump sump has just packed up.
Pondkeeper.co.uk are now closed for the holiday and not open until Monday.
I've ordered a replacement from them on-line.
Fortunately I was able to quickly change it over to my summer pump a PondExpert 15000lt.
The joy of Blagdon connectors made it possible in five minutes.
Happy New Year!"The information's out there,

Number 4 applies to me, I was balanced around the edge of pond fixing my filter house, after I finished went in to make a cup of tea, when I came out I took a little look in the pond, just to see something silver flickering right at the bottom of the pond, to start with I thought it was a dead fish, when all of a sudden the Apple sign came up flickering through the water!!!! GULP
I fished it out but it was totally dead, only 4 months old and not insured, totally gutted!!
Looks like koi's law bit me right on the butt that day!

On the subject of mobile phones and I except I'm "old school" not being brought up with them. In my teens we had a phone at my parents' home, it was kept in a red box.....At the end of the street! I have a mobile, but it lives in the front ashtray of my car, "for emergencies."
I refused to have a mobile when I was working, much to my employer's annoyance, as I considered at like having a "security tag," "they could always find you."
Anyway, some people are addicted to them. We were in a restaurant last night and a couple in their forties at the next table each had their mobile on the table next to them.A common practice these days. Throughout the meal the woman every few seconds would glance down at her phone.
Another couple shared the table on the other side to us. They both spent more time texting on their phones than in conversation with each other.
Where will it all end?

My UV steriliser was "blinking" over the week-end, the usual symptom of a failing lamp. So I ordered a couple of replacements. (Two for the price of one).
They arrived this morning.. A five minute job to swop them over. "What were the chances of that happening."
Err.. No change.
An examination of the ballast unit revealed quite a bit of cracking and a few areas which looked like heat damage. Sometimes it is just the starter bulbs, that fail but I've found in the past, these are now hard wired, rather than replaceable.
So I had to order a new unit. "I'd only had it five minutes," but a check on my computer and I found I bought it in 2011.
It was the third thing this week.
New tyre on Tuesday,
New front brake pads for the car today (I'd arranged for that anyway)
and now the UV. no change out of three hundred-odd quid this week.
I had a bit of a moan to my wife. I got no sympathy there. "You were only talking about buying some new clubs last week, they'd have cost twice as much as that!"
The clubs sadly, will have to wait.

What do you need new clubs for anyway, they're just a stick for batting a little ball around a field.

I've told this before, but new members may not have read it.
This letter was in one issue of the BKKS magazine, nearly thirty years ago.
This member said he went to the doctor as he was feeling unwell. The doctor examined him and concluded that he was suffering from stress.
"What do you do for a living?"
I'm a solicitor, I'm involved in a lot of litigation, so I'm in court a lot."
"Well, that's probably, what's causing it."
"No I don't think so, I quite enjoy it."
"So what else do you do?"
"I keep Japanese koi."
"Tell me about it."
So he went into detail about all the aspects of koi keeping and the problems you can get.
"Well! That's what's causing you the stress! Get rid of them!"
"I can't do that!"
"Why not?"
"They help me to relax!"

I read quite a few:
I have one - In DIY koi pond build whatever you plan to do there will obviously be some issues and you have to plan again to overcome the problem.
I was planning to dig holes for the wooden post for the woodenn frame for the pond cover. All was going well until I found a hard concrete bed difficult to penitrate underneath the spot for a particular whole for a post
I have not replanned yet to counter this. But I'm sure I will do and overcome this!!

When costing the pond you
must factor in a substantial amount for all the gifts, meals flowers for your wife while building the pond to avoid earache!Last edited by Jazz; 15-03-2020 at 09:39 PM.

When changing the bulb on the UV don’t reinsert the old bulb just to check it wasn’t actually working causing smoke to come out the top due to water getting in the socket and then having to buy a like for like replacement.....same brand, same model but 7 years apart thinking you can do a quick swop out and connect to the fixed piping only to find they have changed it and now it is 6” longer. That quick bulb change took 10 days due to having to order online, wait for delivery, needing two new bends, pipe, solvent weld, having to adapt the hose tail to go up to 1.5” to take the 1.5”-2” flexible rubber boot and around 6 hours putting it on at a cost of around £160.......this was after spending 4hrs two days earlier trying with a flexible hose before conceding that if a job is to be done to do it properly.

Mine is when you order a lovely new fish online only for your current fish to start acting weird/getting sick just before it's due to arrive. Fish that have been fine for years/decades.
Bonus points if water parameters OK and the microscope reveals nothing.
Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
