Pond Build
yea there is always a black cloud waiting for me to start doing anything out doors . think i should have a set of water proofs hanging on my back door the worst thing to date was the whole side of my new pond collapsing after a real down poor didn't get a chance to sure it up it was nearly dark you never think it will happen . When it caved in it took my land drain with it as well as all the gravel those were the days{ but it was well worth it} you soon forget all those little problems ??? when it is up and running and you can't wait to add some koi smiles at last take care every one

Make your pond as big as you can afford the first time around and get as much advice as possible about costs, filters and pumps

Think I've been jinxed with Koi's law this week
1 - while trying to weight a surface skimmer down as it wouldn't stay put on the first attempt the stones I put in the basket were porous so weighed very little when put in the water so I found a nice biggish rock and while trying to position it all in the pond the rock fell out of the basket which I then had to use a landing net to get it back out - thought afterwards - why didn't I just use the pole off the net to push the basket into position in the first place
2 - while trying to move the basket back into position after cleaning the skimmer a few days later I went to unscrew the net from the pole and the brass thread that's meant to stay in the pole came out with the net
3 - today while doing a temporary install on a protein skimmer I took apart a joint that was holding the venturi onto my existing pipe return to the pond - the rubber seal which appeared to be stuck in place stayed in the joint just long enough for me to turn round and put the locking piece on the ground and then it fell out into the pond as I turned back round again Hopefully when the water clears I will be able to see the rubber seal and hook it back out so long as the pump doesn't chew it up in the mean time
If this doesn't come under Koi's law I don't know what does
Now who wants me to pick their lottery numbers this week then?
It's being so lucky that keeps me going I think

I carefully lined my pond sides and bottom with rigid foam sheets, spot glued before the liner went in. Filled pond and added fish. Found I had misjudged the filter height and decided to raise the pond by one more course.
Instructed builder and went off to sons wedding.
Builder removed loose bricks holding liner in place and duly added course of bricks.
Returned from wedding at 4 am. All was good
7am was awoken with the news of a problem with the pond.
Builder hadn't put the loose bricks back on top of liner, wind had flipped loose edge of liner onto pond just where the pond return is. Most of 6000 galls had been pumped from inside the liner to between liner and wall.
Insulating sheets are very bouyant when not held in place by tons of water and floated. Side ones (6ft tall) vertically holding up the liner about 3ft above the walls with the liner on top. Liner sheets from the bottom were at random Angles.
Bought 2 above ground swimming pools to add to the one we already had to save water and fish. Dumped about 4000 gallons.
Liner survived but for a small tear around the skimmer.
Every fish was saved.

When checking the cleaning nozzles on my drum I carefully took them apart well away from the drum so as not to lose anything inside, dropped a small piece which bounced off to who knows where. After a fingertip search of the area whic was fruitless I ordered another, along with a spare for next time.
No doubt when the new bits arrive koi's law will allow me to fine the lost part.

koi's law, hole in liner has to be in bottom, try fixing liner find out butyl you paid for 9 years ago when inexperience is pvc,pvc hard and cracks when moved, buy new firestone liner, fit bd raise walls whilst got the chance,uv wont work, buy new endcaps bulb and quartz sleeve, find out its the electrics, now got more water than filter designed for,buy used filter with 55w uv,now running 2 filters, find out new filter rubbish but uv good, need whole new filter system, buy a sieve but cant afford to buy new filter until next month, and all the while the wife keeps finding gorgeous fish and buying them, saying but it was nice and it was looking at me smiling aaarrrgh.money shes spent on fish i could of had new filter.but now i have to wait and keep cleaning filters daily.all this because of a hole in liner the size of a penny

The wife agreeing to the build as it will only cost in the region of £1500 but it actually costs around £4000 and did I know about it as the credit card bill came in whilst I was at work and then giving the reason that 'I did it all for you my love' doesn't make it any better. It then costs a few hundred for a present to calm things down and when it is given she states 'what am I going to do with a fish'
My response 'Put it in your pond' doesn't go down well either - you just cant win! I only hope she likes the ironing board I got her for her birthday, its cost a fortune in wrapping paper.
