You like it, you buy it.... learned that with other things not just koi. As it defo aint there when you return with the cash.

We bought our two best fish in Devon last year, with only 2 days to draw cash out the bank and no other way of getting the money to the dealer, with a bit of luck, some haggling and some trust we got our fish. Otherwise the senario above would have been a definite.

So happy, we did as we did. I got my fish and then we got 5000 fry to go with them. lol

    Nice thread doghouse..... how about....:

    1. The moment you build the pond, every disease and parasite under the sun will gleefully take up residence in your nice new pond and present itself in sequence to give you a summer of joy...

    2. A koi is pre-programmed to route out any way it can to kill itself, various ways may include:
a; Always basking 1" under the water's edge so Mr Heron gets a good view
b; Wondering "what's on the otherside of the water's edge? I'll just jump over and have a look"
c; making it clear something is wrong with itself by sulking and staying motionless, but then turning in to lightening-koi and stressing itself to exhaustion the moment you get your net out to try and have a closer look

    3. Just as you finally convince yourself you've eradicated any parasite or disease problem, a flock of ducks will land and give themselves a nice washdown for half an hour before you see them

    4. Pipework connecting equipment will always not quite fit the other pice of pipe you're trying to connect to (aka I know I can make this push-fit pipe work with a solvent-weld 90' angle)

    5. The filter will overflow / pipe will burst / pump fail / (insert as appropriate) when you're on holiday and your house-sitter hasn't got a clue about anything pond-related

    6. And of course, the bench or seating you put by the pond to 'relax and enjoy watching the fish' has never been sat in for more than 2 minutes by yourself before you get up to 'just check something with one of them / filter / pipework etc............'

    7. ££££££££££££££££££££££££££££

    Cheers

    Ian

With that list Ian, we'd all be better off with a goldfish in a bowl, lol
    1630 Gallon raised pond
    4" 'Avenue' bottom drain
    Estro sieve
    Econobead EB60 bead filter
Sequence 18000 pump, 6000 pump on skimmer line
    Elecro 2kW in-line heater
    Evolution Aqua 70 air pump
    Standard wall skimmer
    Hozelock Vorton 55watt UV
    and some nice koi

Really, given how uselessly weak and how utterly stupid Koi can be sometimes, I do wonder why we don't just spray paint some goldfish.....

But next year will be fine.... no need for new equipment or any new fish... I'll be ready to sit back and relax......

On the subject of "relaxing" as you mentioned, I'm re-posting a message I sent a while back for the benefit of newer members.

Over twenty years ago there was a letter in the BKKS magazine from a solicitor. He said he went to the doctor because he was feeling a bit unwell, after a talk and an examination, the conversation went like this.

"I think you are suffering from stress, tell me about yourself."

"I'm a solicitor and I'm always very busy, I'm involved in a lot of litigation."

"That's probably what is causing the stress."

"I don't think it can be that, as I enjoy it."

"Well what else do you do?"

    "I keep Japanese Koi."

    "Tell me about it."

So he related what the hobby was all about and the problems that can occur with constantly trying to keep them healthy.

"Well, there's your problem, that's what's causing the stress, get rid of them!"

    "I can't do that!"

    "Why not?"

    "They help me to relax!"
    "The information's out there,
You only have to let it in." (Jesse Stone)

you will require an understanding wife or partner who is prepared to wait for the new dress because the fish require a new filter first

This is something that happened yesterday, which I'm including under "Koi's Law." Simply because it was "retribution" for the fact that I managed to do something koi related positive in the morning, like added an extra heater to my pool.

The "pay back" was around half-past seven last night, when I went into the kitchen to make a cup of tea, I found that our naffin' leccy kettle had packed up and I had to dash out and buy another one!

Hello there, I'm in Devon and only recently started this hobby, my question is where in Devon was the dealer that you used?

Gulp - after reading the thread - i am left wondering if one needs to be a rich nut case to even contemplate Koi as a hobby.Perhaps its more sane to get married (Yet again) and - leave all my money to her or .................take up Goldfish?
