but is back to 12.7C now daytime temps are back above 5C still unheated...

    The results are in!

I’ve been recording and plotting my pond temperature over 2022, and here is the final plot. So this is a 4500 gallon raised pond, half in the ground/half out. Insulated pond walls, and all filters insulated inside a custom shed. Not heated.

The first four months of 2022 the pond was covered with polycarbonate, and the temp was pretty stable around 8c. The covers came off in April, and while there was an upward trend, overall there was less temp stability and more swings. The fish had a few parasite problems in this time, and I don’t think the temp swings helped.

The pond reached 20c on the 17th of June, and achieved a peak temp of 23.1 in July. Overall the pond stayed consistently above 20c for only 7 weeks! Even though that is a really short peak growing season, the fish all seemed to do well on the food and packed on some size.

The pond started to drop temp slowly in early September, but there was one particularly cold weekend. I had been away fishing for a couple nights, and returned to find the pond had dropped 4c!

The covers went back on shortly after that and temps were stable. Things started cooling slowly in November, and you can see the December cold snap. Even when things got to -8c outside, the pond stayed above 5c. Temps have recovered now, and I’m back at 8.6c today.

In an ideal world I think I would heat the pond to help stabilise temps in spring and autumn, and have a longer summer growing period. Think the plan for 2023 is to try and manage the temp a bit more with the covers, but we’ll see how things go.

some good results you've had there over a whole year
what thickness insulation do you have on your pond and filterthouse, and did you insulate the pond floor?

in early spring late autumn, i find by taking the covers off during the day, and putting them back on at night.
i can extend the 'open top' season of the pond from april to the end of october/november.

i've been looking at getting a 'smart' thermostat to automatically log the pond temperature over a year...

Thanks Dave, the pond walls have 30mm insulation boards on the inside. Like your pond I believe, the floor isn’t insulated so I get the benefit from ground heat. At the moment all the filters are covered in thermawrap, but I might spend sometime insulating the shed walls this year too.

A smart meter sounds better than my method! The Daily pond temp thread

did you record them all yourself manually?

yeah there are various smart thermometers and stats on amazon, just hook it up to the app, and wifi...

i used 50mm celotex boards on the inside, plus the 200mm thick, dry, sealed sleepers have about the same thermal resistance as 50mm of celotex,
so i have a total equivalent of 100mm celotex above ground.

insulating the filterhouse and pipe runs will make a big difference to total heat loss.
i've got 50mm of celotex in the walls, under the floor, and in the roof of the filter house/log cabin. plus i get a little help from the 50mm thick wooden log walls.

unfortunately thermawrap bubble wrap has virtually no insulation value for conduction or convection , as it only works as a radiation barrier,
and you need a 25mm air gap in front of it on the warm side for it to work as that.

Cheers Dave, I used an app on my phone which took some of the effort out! Will have a think about improving on the thermawrap!

i insulated the filters and pipework on my old pond with 50mm celotex, and 25mm thick armaflex, but used to get a lot of condensation when it was freezing outside.

none of my filters and pipework inside the filterhouse on my new pond are insulated now,
i just insulated the whole filterhouse and get very little condensation inside, even when it was minus -8C the other week...

Fed mine today for the first time in a month! I have a friend back from Canada so wanted to wait till it was light and show him the pond properly with a feed. We went to a couple of dealers today for a nose and I very nearly purchased a nice Sanke Tosai! I kept it together and resisted thankfully
