which could be caused by the high fat food starting to go rancid, which it will do within a month or so of opening.
or that you are over feeding and the food isn't being properly digested, or your pond is not at the right temperature for feeding that type of food ect...
and to stop feeding for day, then feed your food coated in a probiotic enzyme, to aid better digestion.
which, when you think about it, is kind of common sense and something you would do with any animal or human
Agin... he does have a point there... no finger sniffing after prodding though guys !!

i don't think having a pond below 13C and above 4C means fish will immediately be at high risk of getting infected with pathogens, just that they are less resistant to them.
i think the reason we suffer with problems like this especially badly in the UK is low early spring, and late autumn temperatures.
effectively making spring 2 months, summer 2 months, and autumn 2 months, with 6 months of winter...makes it a very long haul for fish with little time to put on weight and strength.
    year on year.
before a long duration of little to no food, weakens them and makes them more susceptible to infection.

and even though their adaptive immune systems may be shut down, they have an innate immune system, rudimentary as it may be.
my old pond in the 90's endured these temperatures every autumn, winter, and spring.
but i made sure the parameters were spot on, and kept the pond clean of debris, and continued with water changes.
to be fair it's not nice looking at your fish huddled up on the bottom of the pond, but if they have had a good feed right up to december/january with temps at 20C+
i think a few months in the depths of winter down at single digits should be fine, but i'll see how far i go with that this winter

Like DBS our pond was newly stocked last year (with a shiny new ashp but no glass unfortunately) so I asked our dealer for advice concerning 'winter'.

Dealers hold livestock all year round after all. His recommendation was to hold temperature at 14 and stop feeding for 1 month. When the weather was at it's coldest there was a short spell when 13 was as much as the heater could manage but otherwise I was quite pleased with how things worked out and even when not fed the fish remained active.

While the covers were on the auto feeder had to be put away in favour of hand feeding but I will be trying to modify one of the covers to accommodate that as the wife and I also prefer to be kept warm in winter and hope to have an extended stay in Spain and Portugal now that the covid situation has eased

Bloody hell the seasons deffo changing, air temps got down to 4.4c last night, at 8a.m they had risen to 5c and the pond was at 13.9c.
Air temps not expected to go above 12c today but a little sun forecast which may help if it actually comes.

Pond steady at 13.9c, fish still active and begging for food but I'm starting to reduce the amount that goes in now.

Was around 21 yesterday before a water change. Fish still eating every 3 hours roughly. Will reduce as the temp slowly drops but may keep over 20 till the end of Oct if I want to pay through the nose for electricity!

Temperatures here are meant to hit 20c again today - will be a miracle

Without my ASHP the water would have been all over the place the way the weather is going up and down... bloody jack frost next week I bet !!

Meant to get down to about 2 degrees in some places Thursday morning I believe! I put the heater on yesterday before bed as it was at 19. Only just turned the dial so the temp clicked on hoping it would bring the temp up to 20 and woke to it being just over 22 according to my eBay thermometer! Hopefully with the mild temps at the moment it will maintain the temps for a bit being covered but we shall see. Certainly won't be using the heater much this winter with the electricity costs.

I’m with you on the costs. My pond is now fully wrapped and covered, it’s holding at 19C but I’ve set my heater at 17.5C and plan to control it down to around 12C over winter. The way the electric and gas costs are flying up is just plain scary.

My ASHP is maintaining at 18.5 in the main pond -covered and yesterday moved the 14 Nisai & Sansai (ranging from 23cm to 35cm) into it from the unheated smaller pond which was at 16 to join the other 17 larger koi (ranging from 40cm to 23year old at 70cm) Hoping that this winter I can keep to around 14 then drop lower than 4 maybe in Jan then back up to 14 without last years yo yo temps

With the sun and mild weather today the pond is back up to 24! heater was turned off at 8am so definitely not that adding the extra degrees although I am not sure how much I trust that thermometer anyway. Either way, growing season is still upon us in my pond if only till the end of the week

Yeah I am sure I remember Mark saying he fed sinking food. I only fed floating food and it took a few days but it eventually came up and now is one of the first to feed

the weather has taken another down turn here,
it was about 6C overnight, and forecast high low of 11C to 6C for the next couple of days.
the pond still holding at 23C though,
so the 1kw heater is coping with a delta T of 17C fine, but is on more atm.

Absolutely horrendous weather with pretty much non stop rain today but it has been a little milder through yesterday and last night. Pond temp up a little at 14.5c so I gave in to those wagging bodies and open mouths and fed mussels as well as some pellets today.
