Good morning. I've just woken up from a good night's sleep. Yes, that's right. When I was in the UK, the Northern Section of the BKKS immediately changed the date of the KOI show to winter when I told them about it. (Because that's what All Japan does?). That's not what I wanted to say. In the UK we don't have enough summer husbandry, so the assumptions are different. We have a very clear separation between feeding and resting periods. If they are not kept properly in the summer, it is not good to leave them for a long winter, don't you think?
※Perhaps KOI husbandry is not a suitable translation?
I don't know what I am trying to say is this. Which one is right???

成育→ growing up

Unless am being thick here. That's glazed over what as been ask yet again still no answers. Other than every thing what is it we are doing wrong in the UK.. In a North facing garden I could maybe feed 1 month out if the year if am to wait til 20o. But at the same time we panic to much about the cold and should just leave them iced over. Every thing you are telling is coming across to me contradictory to every thing I have ever been told but not explaining any of it to me....
What are we doing wrong
Please can you list and back it up with information to explain.
Why feed so little you said once a week till we hit 20o. Why. What's wrong with 3 4 5 feeds a day at 15 16 what the fish eat in 5/10 mins is what is generally done here!?... You've said it bad to do summer shows. Fine but why. We handle our koi to. Much please expand on that statement . Can you see a pattern here.. This all started in Japan its been done a lot longer over there so the experience is there so pass it on if that's what your on the forum for

The climate in Durham, where you live.

I live in Tokyo

This is Ojiya in Niigata where many traditional KOI breeders are located.

What do we see when we compare them?Last edited by Naoki Atsumi; 11-02-2021 at 03:41 AM.

That's great but I don't live in Durham, tbh most of your posts make no sense to me.
I have asked you to explain stuff but you never do so.
Perhaps you should post less unless you are prepared to explain your theory's more clearly. Being Japanese doesn't necessarily make you a koi expert but you do appear good at plucking random stuff from the internet copy and paste with no backup explanation.

Right hotter summers. So do a lot of places miami Spain oz that still dosent answer a single question on koi keeping dose. Tbf am just bored now and don't belive you have a clue what you are talking about. Back your shit up. Don't feed unless at 20 because japan is hotter. Yet a again a post that makes not sense

Look at animals in Zoos throughout the world
They survive our temperate climes , most born in these zoos not recently exported from Africa
Shows that animals acclimatise to their surroundings. Polar bears love the snow . . aint many Lions that do ? not the Attenbroughs I have seen haha
Our Koi have acclimatised to a northern temperate cycle ie cold in winter and warm ish in summer
They take advantage of "our" summer temps to grow and proliferate. . . Aj have babies . . . .
see Mankysanke Heating Koi ponds Thread
a good explanation about how the Koi live and "reasoning" too . . youll like that Big Nige
Basically in the wild in lakes there is a stratifying (levels/bands) and generally water will be at a lower zone approx 4C
we will not have that in our ponds as our pumps, airstones etc continually mix the water . . . . . unless you switch off. . . however most ponds wouldnt have the depth
Even fish in Torpor move, slowly, but they are keeping their systems moving just at a slower pace
warmer weather the fish will become more active. . .it is in their DNA
all we have to do is help protect ie ensure temp doesnt drop past 2-3C as this is when "cold can kill"
so keep covered , monitor temp . if you can add a little heat the better
hope this helps and doesnt confuse .Last edited by Wain; 11-02-2021 at 09:38 AM.

Coldest night in ten years for the uk according to the Met office..
We barely got above freezing for a few hours yesterday, -2c by 4:30p.m, -4c by 8.p.m, then down to -6c through the night... looking at some parts of the UK that was mild.. -6c though is the coldest it has ever got in the 3 winters we have been in this house.
Anyhow, I was dreading what would greet me this morning,
8.am, air temp -5c, with return now fully under water the pond has a sheet of ice all over bar for where I moved the heater to including under the half I covered with tarp yesterday. Struggled to find places I could get in the water to test the temp. Anyway, after much faffing, Pond temp is 3.6c which is actually up on yesterday.
The fish whilst not doing a lot all look ok from what I can see, I'll take that for now.Last edited by arceye; 11-02-2021 at 09:54 AM.

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
