Yeah the pond is fully enclosed. Return is via a blade so may not be helping but is enclosed within the pond cover.
I think my problem is that the filters are fully exposed so acting as a chiller.. since I changed all of the filters last year I never managed to build them a new house and I have been reluctant to invest in it given I plan a rebuild.
As mentioned before the fish are in good health and I see no danger to them.

Jeezu its cold!!
-3 all night and everything outside is frozen hard. Currently -1 air temp with a thin layer of ice on some of the pond.
Pond temp down to 3.3c ... the fittings for the new return have arrived so that's todays job hopefully if I can fit it in around the everyday other stuff I have to do. Will see how that goes, its meant to warm tonight so I'll make a decision as to put the heater back on or not later.

Prior to last night the temperature over the past 2 or 3 days here in South Wales has been a balmy 10/11c. Though it did drop to 1c last night and is currently only 3c.
The pond is uncovered and is currently holding at 7c and the heater hasn't been on for 4 days and nights.

New return was plumbed in yesterday and wrapped with 2 or 3 layers of foil bubble stuff, down side is its a longer run than previously, upside is it isn't returning via my open stream and at least has a little insulation.
Anyhow, It never stopped freezing all yesterday but air temps rose in the night.
9:30 a.m air temp was 5c... pond temp 3.2c hopefully a few milder days to come.

Morning folks,
9:30 a.m Air Temp ... 5c ... Pond at 4c
Met office has a very wet but relatively mild week of around 6c or 7c forecast for our area so should at least have a week off from temperature worries.

Insulated to death and I’m glad of it now . Staying at a barmy 17 degrees, fish (those that remain) still feeding and growing well. ASHP just on a few hrs in the daytime, with the coldest winter in years because of all this global warming roll on spring.

Milder day hitting 6C with no rain today. Thaw is complete.
Pond at 10.5C so switched heater off again today will leave for a day or so and see what happens ?
Plan is when it drops below 8C ish I will put heater back on and bring to 10C keep that couple of degree swing until the weather picks up or becomes more constant ie no more freeze then will leave heater off permanently if daytime temps sit above 5C. Will allow the fish a bit of a rest / torpor
Fed with flake and a bit of wheatgerm and was took instantly, all fish at surface feeding, none in torpor yet1000 gal

Wonder how long this unprecedented cold snap will last . Doesn’t seem an end in sight, glad I’m missing it, 23 degrees again here today for the 48th day running

Well you've either got your central heating turned up very high or you aren't in the UK
It's that cold where I am that a cold nap in the morning could need medical treatment
