Pond at 5c - fish still mooching around slowly

Grow on heat reduced to 21c to keep the daily costs under £1

    Sweet mate.

Have a resident frog now and it's a big one. Accidentally hoovered it up when clearing leaves from the bottom and it got stuck in the Hoover pipe but came out unscathed.

Not sure if I mentioned we put 2 baby shubunkins in there and they are fine too and growing well but not moving about much in current temps. Missus wants me to put them in with the koi for winter but they will almost certainly end up down bottom drain so going to leave them to survive by themselves.

I wanted to get minnows but wife said no.
Then she got the shubunkins and sure enough she forgot all about them and they became my responsibility !

I’m at 14 now. That’s probably going to be my winter temp for Jan I think. Not sure whether to leave ASHP on overnight or not..... This global warming lark is a PITA.

Flipping snow has blocked all the vents on the ASHP and the pond is down to 13.4.

I think the fan has dragged it in and it's solid all over the element, auto defrost doesn't touch it.

I always think folks who use hot water to defrost cars are nuts but can't think of any other way to clear this without damaging it:-(

Will get out there as soon as it's light.

Nightmare! What was the temp set at?

Not sure what to suggest how to resolve it, doesn’t the main fan blow and not suck?

Is the unit sited where snow would gather? If so I would consider lifting it. I know others make a small porch type cover to try and help protecting from the elements

Let us know how you get on Jim.

Hot tap water poured slowly onto the element has cleared it. When the snow first started it was very powdery and the layer coating the element had formed like ice that's why I assume the fan drew it in and compacted it.

I have put an old off cut of polycarbonate over the top to try to keep the snow off but of course the installation instructions say the top should be clear as well as the sides so I must keep an eye on it.

Time to get my chops round a bowl of porridge to defrost me now:-)

Air temps dropped to -3 yesterday evening, then rain / sleet on frozen ground... had to shuffle walk with the dog this morning to avoid ending up on my backside.

Anyway... 10:30 Air temp up to 1.7c ... Pond temp a chilly 2.9c

Mike, the heater is set at 17 and I think it switches on when the water entering drops below 15 and off again at 17. The heater discharges via the anoxic chamber then into the pond by gravity. I'm trying to maintain 14 degrees as it's effectively a new pond and I want to avoid NPS come spring.

I have a temperature sender right next to the diffuser in the anoxic chamber and the seneye is at the skimmer / bottom drain end of the pond and of course near the surface so probably the only colder water in the whole system is the short run of pipe off the skimmer which of course isn't insulated.

The heater element extends across the rear and one end of the heater so air is drawn in over that and exhausted through the front face. I can watch the frost develop on the front face as it runs and periodically the fan stops and the unit defrosts. I presume that uses more leccy than the actual heating mode!

I have now removed the snow from the pond covers and the day seems to be brightening up so hopefully we've seen the last of it

Jim how often is your auto defrost kicking in? Mines heating fine but constantly freezing up and defrosting in these conditions. Im not having it on over night in these temps cant see the point.
