are you running a heater now Steve?
or do you have a geothermal spring under your pond like antartica...
global warming alone melting the antartic ice cap? seems not....
it's got a mantle plume very close to the surface underneath it

Well that was a horrible night.. lots of rain / hail / sleet. Half the garden was flooded out this morning and the sump pump I have in a pit had failed to trigger on the float so I had to paddle to that and activate the float manually. At least thats drained the garden now.
If we still had the original goldfish pond that was here when we came the fish would have been swimming round the garden so its a good job I raised the pond out of the ground.
Anyway... 10a.m.... air temp 4c .. Pond temp 6.4c.. no food today, fish still reasonably active.

Twice this year thats happened, will have to check out my pumps float set up.
Nothing too deep but this picture taken in the summer shows what happens to the gardens on our road if you don't have a pump in operation when the rains come.
garden flood 3.jpg
Joys of living on what is pretty much old marsh land where the water table is never far below the ground.
I suspect the problem was worsened when they built houses to the rear about 25 years ago on the field that our gardens would have drained to, the new houses had there gardens raised so the land we should have drained to is now a foot higher than our gardens.
The old pond was in the same position as the current one but level with the ground so must have had problems in times of heavy rain.

blimey arceye that's quite bad, i fear its going to be an issue for many people as there seems to be houses going up everywhere now where years ago permission would not of been given due to marsh land / high water tables and flood risk but i guess housing pressure is forcing the issue.....

Hi DTF
Only a 300w aquarium heater 24/7 in the bio section, it is helping to maintain temps, as it gets cold like it has the past few days the temp is dropping in the pond but a lot slower than it would of done so its helping, if ambient temps are say 12c plus it has the ability to raise the temp by .3 of a degree per 24 hours, once ambient temps really drop i doubt the 300w will have the ability to help at all but it will be interesting to see what happens, cheers Steve2200 gallons, infinity window,

Originally had the 600w set to 15.5C and it was on every time i looked.
Now reduced to 14.3C and of the 4 occasions I checked today it was off.
That's not bad considering there was a frost this morning and air temp only reached 6C today.
Not sure how I'm going to work out what it's costing as I don't have any gadgets to ascertain that, but if it was on 24 hours a day it would be costing £1.87 a day on my 13p kWh tariff.
So assuming it is on 12 - 14 hrs a day it is costing about £1 a day.
Tomorrow's air temp highs forecast to be 3C so I'd have thought it will be on for longer.
There's another associated cost people don't talk about and that's food. I thought 8.5kg of food would see me through till spring, but already down to 3kg so will look at lowering pond down to about 12C next week and drop to one feed a day.

No - it has been my nickname since I was about 15 - it’s Italian for ‘The Devil’.
I’ve never been brave enough for a Lamborghini - have dabbled with quite a few Ferrari and Porsche though over recent years. And now I find myself in - Land Rover, maybe I should change to OldSodDave......
Sticking with the topic though - yes I too am thinking of stepping down for maybe 6 weeks to 14ish as don’t want any egg bound issues next year which I’m worried I may get if I keep at 17.9CLast edited by DiabloDave; 04-12-2020 at 12:03 PM.

ASHP is set to 17c and water passes through the anoxic system first, measuring (usually between 16.9 and 15.9) currently16.3 on entry.
The Seneye is in the pond approx adjacent to the BD and only 3 or 4 ft from the skimmer so probably measuring the coldest part of the pond currently 15 and lowest of 14.2 during the last 24 hours.
But, snow is now settling round the edges of the polycarb covers,

You are spoiling them fish lol, I saw you had snow and thought bloody hell, then saw you are in Chorley and wasn't so surprised.
I come from Leyland originally but lived in Chorley from 95 to 06 and also used to do my weekend nights out in Chorley back in the eighties, always seemed to get snow while some of the nearby towns like Leyland would escape it, just a bit nearer the Pennines I think.
