My pond hit 12C this morning.

It was at 20C last Monday and still just under 18C Wednesday morning. Been a fast drop.

WOW! thats a fast drop RS,
how are the fish taking it?

been dropping mine by a degree every few days,
i'm aiming to run at 16C until end of nov then see how hard the winter is...

mine suffers from small volume at only 1000 gallons...
but on the plus side had the green light for mk2 pond next year

it's going to be a bit of a radical design....

They're coping but don't look happy and were quite skitty and shy today, not sure if due directly to temp drop or if they were spooked after I test fitted new Polycarb covers yesterday.

Ammonia also spiking due to sudden temp drop after feeding 200 grams a day just before the weather changed.

I was supposed to pick up a new koi next weekend on proviso I could maintain within 2 degrees of the sellers heated pond... Not going to happen unfortunately!

It has to have been caused by wind-chill, we've had strong bitter winds for a few days now.

Couldn’t have done it without the help of my young kids, my daughter helped out all day tearing the tape and peeling off the backing - made it a lot easier to get the wrapping around the pipe work fairly neat and tidy. Thought I’d make a blanket to go over it all in order to protect from wind chill and keep rain etc off of it as best as possible. Did a bit of it a week or so ago and it made a noticeable difference on the electric consumption so hopefully with the pond now covered too it will make even more of a difference. I’m actually considering battening out the pond sides with it too to reduce the risk of the sleepers getting wet and thus preventing the sides getting colder.

Pond covers went down a few days earlier, just finished packing rolled up bubble wrap under the frames and around all the gaps in the rocks.
makes a lot of difference when the temps really drop,
not having big gaps letting all the heat out...

it was supposed to be a lot easier this year,
i was supposed to have built a new pond by now...3.6m x 2.8m x 1.5m raised pond with 200mm thick insulated sides.

but what with covid lock down, and heated negotiations with the missus
    it didn't happen...

    the up side is,
due to the delay of arguing over having it raised for ease of maintenance.
i told her the cost of materials has now gone up....considerably
    her fault...

Oh dear! Well if it's any consolation, I had a right nightmare getting hold of parts during lockdown for my filter change. I think in the end I got my hands on the last Oase ProfiClear Compact M in the UK as their production came to a total halt earlier in the year. A lot of their drums require a two man team to assemble and that contravened distancing rules at the time - at least that's what Oase UK told me!

It's shocking how much some things have gone up in price now due to COVID. I only hope the market will reset its price points when the world finds its new 'normality' - hopefully by Q2 next year.

The knock on effect on the construction industry as a whole has been devastating. My hubs' company make prefab Passivhaus certified eco homes. He's sold several million £'s worth during lockdown as many are being used as a accommodation for the homeless or hospital discharges, so have been critical for many councils. Trouble is - they couldn't get the timber, or the fixtures (windows, doors, toilets, etc), to actually make them as all the supply chains collapsed. It's a mad, mad world The Daily pond temp thread

Just as well we've got koi to watch to keep us sane! Well, that is when they're parasite free The Daily pond temp thread
