Same thing happened to one of my mum's Acers this year. Most bizarre as they were all in the same sized pots having been planted out together a few years back. She's now put all 4 of them in the ground, 3 look lovely and this 4th is a rather sad twiggy excuse despite all the things she tried as you did. Hope it comes back next year. Very good point, but don't worry... hard to see in that photo, but the back right top jacket sticks up and it's under there that the air pumps used to sit, so there was fresh air getting in to them all the time

The air pumps on my new set up are on a shelf stand so I'm hoping that the heat they chuck out (and they really do chuck it out!) will circulate within the filter house as a whole:

But you can see how hard it's going to be to put an insulating jacket around the ProfiClear as there are too many pipe's coming off the sides. The Nexus was easy being smooth all the way around with the pipework underneath. I could just lay one jacket over the top, but I'm just not sure it really needs it with the insulated lid. The other thing I was contemplating was dropping an aquarium heater into the biochamber. Has anyone done that with something like this and was it effective?
Too much flow for an aquarium heater to have a chance/effect, unless you wanted less than 50l/h ha ha. Are you thinking of your return piping to keep warm?

Is it worth attaching/glueing permanent insulation to the profi? Just do it once and it's done. Only downfall I could think of is the resell it won't look at normal, or aesthetics.

On second thoughts and actually looking at your enclosure, I'd look at insulating the doors, and the roof (if it is wood). The brick walls too of you're that worried. Might be easier, and the air pumps will keep it cozy.

Thanks for your ideas. My OCD kicked in pretty hard at the thought of gluing insulation to the side of my drum I think I will use the Armaflex on my return pipework again, but I'm still in two minds about the rest. May just play it by ear and see how the water temps hold.

if they are small acers less than (5 years old) and if they are the very slow growing type.
they can take years before the root systems can support them in sun and dry wind.

the ground is the best place for them, so they can build up an extensive root system.
a lot of mine still burn in the sun, the tips anyway... and could really do with a shadier spot.
that will get sorted once i complete my new pond, there will be lots of planting spots under the pergola

but some varieties fair much better in full sun usually the reds, (garnet, bloodgood, atropurpureum ect...)
and some of the darker green, larger leaved more vigorous growing types, like osakazuki.

the very small leaved light green types burn the easiest....

Agree, the red ones look great against black or grey patio.

Mine does this every year and comes back fine the following year. It did last longer than usual this year where I kept it in the shadiest spot of the garden and also I planted a sunflower in its pot so I could water it regularly knowing the soil won't stay constantly wet since the sunflower takes it all up. I know nothing about plants so don't know if that's a good idea or not but it seemed to help.

i insulated my filters and pipework last year with 50mm celotex all around including underneath...
and 25mm thick rubaflex (same as armaflex only cheaper )

yours looks a little more complicated with the cut outs needed, but still pretty straight forward....
either just build a square celotex box around it, or insulate the whole filter house...

Hmmm, yes, the boxing in idea is food for thought, thanks. Think I prefer that to trying to insulate the interior of the filter house. That's just a world of pain!

Up to 21.0 today and yesterday. Which is odd as my heater is set at 18.5 and I don’t think the air temp has bee over 20 today. But I’m not going to complain!

Im going to finish wrapping the filter in the reflective bubble wrap and then go around the pond walls with it too. 35mm will be going on in the next week I think....

Well some proper rain last night, just as Boris was indicating we should go to the Naughty step? Drizzling right now & overcast! So for once the weather forecast was right, Bye Summer, hello Autumn!

    Outside in the open it’s 18.6°c 81%RH @ 1528 this afternoon, in the shade it’s 18.8°c?
The polytunnel is closed up, & the air temp in there is 21.8°c was 30+ yesterday! The pond is 20.6°c, again following the ups & downs of cooler night, hot days. But hanging on well.
Koi still on five feeds a day no changes since last report.

Now 25%+ on my radiotherapy, busy few weeks ahead!

    Stay Lucky guys

outside temps have really dropped now struggling to get into double figures...
pond heated to 18C but will be dropping down it later on in the year when temps take a big dip.

haven't had time to put the covers on but need to get it done today or the leccy meter will be spinning off the wall

Put my 35mm polys on Tuesday night. Temps here in Cambs have been down to 9c at night. Currently 11.5c and blowing a gale.

Filter and all pipework is inside brick filter house with timber doors and roof but still not insulated - yet. Two large windows (1.2 and 1.8 x 0.6m) uninsulated. In ground and raised, fibreglassed over insulation but unheated. Water temps have held steady between 18.1 and 19c in sun. Even early hours of this morning, it was still 18.1c.

Poly covers rule The Daily pond temp thread.

It'll be really interesting just how warm this water stays all winter. I'm going to be recording water and air temps daily this time so will be able to give a good analysis come spring The Daily pond temp thread

It really is Fred! I just went out to feed mine and thought I was going to take off over the pond when the wind caught the poly as I lifted it! I've been watching my weather app like a hawk this last week which is why Tuesday night was my cover up target The Daily pond temp thread For once I got the timing right! Last year my Polys went on 3rd week October. Autumn is well and truly here earlier this year. The Daily pond temp thread

Yep got my 35mm covers on too but still have to finish insulating the shower and last bit of pipe work (it’s all got wet now it’s rained so need a dry breezy day to get the worst of the wet off then I will towel dry and wrap it all up.

Pond has been sitting above 18.1C for last few weeks but I’ve dropped the heater to 17.8C as it’s going to be an expensive winter me thinks!

Location dartford time 10 o’clock pond temp chilly 13c outside temp is around ten feels colder due to wind. I was going to hold out with the covers but might go for it tomorrow, don’t really want to yet though. Started feeding wheat germ now aswell and lowered volume of feed and down to once a day now. When the covers do go on Ill be heating again this year but only one the covers go on. That all seemed to fly by I remeber us all talking about taking off the covers this year like it was yesterday !!!!

I’m now 90% ready for winter...pond temp is at 17.8C, still feeding 5 times a day but slightly reduced amount. Not sure if I’m going to turn the pump down and UV off in a couple of weeks.
