Everything I've read seems to say they need warm temps to grow, nothing lower than 18C and 23C as optimal.

But I know for certain when I lifted the covers off my pond after the last frost last year some Koi had grown, even though they'd not been fed much.

Also my fry (now Tosai) are still growing slowly and they're at 17C.

    Pond temp at 7C today.

Dropped some floating pellets to see what happens and only 1 came up, the Doitsu Metallic Ochiba who always comes up in winter, but last year he got sick for a few days after eating at cold temps so I probably wont feed pellets again below 8C and stick to earthworms and mussels.

Ive been feeding vitalis in the outside pond, they still race over when they see it sinking even in these temps. apparently you can feed down to 5c

Do you find mussels a saver bet at lower temps then?

Have no idea about the science behind it, just in my mind its logical to feed natural foods because they will naturally be easily digestible as in nature.

I don't think processed man made synthetic foods can match that especially at low temps.

Well, Im almost 100% certain that fancy goldfish fed on live or frozen natural foods have more energy, better colouration and live longer than those fed exclusively on high quality pellets, and they breed more too. Feeding pellets in cold weather sometimes brings them out in dropsy, but never had that on ones fed exclusively live or natural foods in cold temps.

So I guess it's similar with koi.

Makes sense really mate a quess. Think that was some of the logic that Dave vr6 was doing to achieve the white back on one of his koi?

    Pond temp at 8C today.

Always seems to be much slower to rise in temp than drop!

I think I’m experiencing that now! The temps have dropped and seems the ponds taking time to come back up even with the heater and polycarb. Maybe the ground holds the cold for a while? Even though it’s got more mild the ground may still be cold deep down? They say that with fishing can take days even weeks for them to warm up after a cold spell? Must admit find it odd it’s taking time with the heater but then if the grounds cold it could be a temperature battle lol. Where in Kent are ya mate ? What temps you been today? Intrested as I’m slightly south of ya

have you tried canned sweet corn and sweet peas, I feed these in the winter as they just don't seem to get excited about the pellets. I haven't fed at all for a couple weeks now as we had snow and rain. My temps mid-day today were 46 degrees..

Hello mate. I found my older in ground pond was warmer. 5 feet deep. Then my raised pond.

My rebuild is 3 feet in ground. And 3 feet above ground. 6 feet of water. And is a colder pond then my older inground pond.
But since I put a cover on the pond. First time last year. It's been warmer in this pond.
Wind chill on this pond was a massive factor. For making the water colder. Not just the surface of the water. But also the brickwork. I gain about 6 to 8 degrees by having cover on lol
But also on the other hand. When it gets warmer for a few days. The temperature climbs back up pretty quickly. Take the other day it dropped to lowest this year 7.8c within 24 hrs it was back to nearly 10c
Your using an heater I believe. Arnt you. If I remember correctly.
Also I have my top pond open still. So cold air is getting in there.
But up to now I am happy. The fish are still very active.
If it drops to 7c I will shut my top pond down.
And see if that makes a difference
If your at 10c mate. That's good as your fish will still swim about. Which is what you want. It's when they sit on the bottom. All the time. You start getting problems. I did
Ulcers and stuff. I had 2 fish with hypothermia. Saved them in qt. With heat. That's why I bought the cover lol.
    Fred

Also mate the first week of freezing weather your pond was warmer and so was the ground lol.
Now the ground is cold all the time. It is making the pond colder quicker. So pond water gets colder quicker. It's the night tempreture that does it lol. Trysto warm during days. Then freezes again on a night.
So night time is winning. That's my take on it lol
    Fred
