After a dry and a bright start, it is now cloudy with some rain, but nothing too extreme. Similarly, the wind isn’t blowing like it was forecast to! Quite calm infact. It will remain overcast with some further rain this morning but brighter weather will appear this afternoon. After a very mild night, temperatures will remain close to normal today.

Current temp is 8.3°c and the pond is on 11.8°c.

I have seen a lot of cold nights, but sun during the day, along with the usual east Anglian winds! Today @ 11:30 it’s virtually still out there? Forecast is more rain over the next few days & getting back into single figures Temps wise.

    Outside in the open it’s 16.5°c & 50%Rh in the shade it’s 9.4°c
The sun has been bright all morning, so the air temp, in the closed up polytunnel is 21.3°c & the pond is very slowly dropping, currently @ 14.2°c.
All Koi are fine, still on three feeds a day, but the duration/quantity needs to be reduced, as they are showing signs of slowing down the “ravenous” food frenzy, ie- takes about 7-10 minutes to eat it of the top, the sinking food always goes first, from the bottom (if it makes it that far).

    Stay Lucky guys.

It’s that time of year that I don’t see my koi in daylight during the week, so sad really. But under spotlights, they still come to feed in the evening when I get home.

It’s a wet morning here and quite chilly, but nothing too severe.

Down in the South East. My home made tarpaulin and bubble wrap sandwich went on the pond 9 days ago when the semi raised pond temp was 10C.

Despite air temp having been down to zero on a few nights and day time highs briefly reaching 9-11C, the pond has maintained a solid unchanged 10C throughout.

Not sure if this is through the benefit of the cover or if soil temps are simply holding up.

Dry and bright with a cold wind after yet another wet night. A day off work today, so been cleaning my filter which I usually do on a Sunday. Koi still very active and feeding once / twice a day. Heater on and off occasionally.

Current temp is 8.4°c and the pond is on 12.1°c.

The covers will help lol. Just keeping winds of the surface of the pond. Is a massive help. I gain about 4 to 6 degrees in temps
Through having a cover on lol

Didn't realise you were in Dartford Charco. I'm in Dartford regularly as my Nan lives there and I take it in turns with my Mum caring for her.

Steve, 10.4C unheated is a great temp. Mine is down to 9.5C today and my weather is the same as yours.

    Hi Miles,
I hope they are snug, it plays on your mind that they are now getting colder each day, I take the window cover off every morning and give them a feed or check them over, going to seem a long 5/6 months or so until the covers come off......cheers Steve.

Hi RS..... I think the pond being protected on 3 sides along with a full side of celotex is helping it, I am looking into covering all the filtration and as much of the piping as possible as its all currently open to the elements, trouble is the costs involved are crazy to have a bespoke shelter made from a composite material, cheapest quote so far is £1100 up to £1800 I wish I could do it myself but rubbish at DIY....Steve..

wow you southern lads are getting some great temps even unheated!
reckon mine would be well into single digits already without the heater.
we've had a few frosts already this year!

    Location: Bedworth
    max/min outside temp 1C - 5C
    pond is heated to 20C
    35mm polycarb covers.
1KW heater was using 17 kWh a day prior to insulating the filters and pipes.
    now using about 12 kWh a day @ £0.13 /kWh day rate with about 50% of that on economy 7 @ £0.07 /kWh so currently about £1.20 a day
Fish are very happy and i'm feeding them 3-4 times a day, plus some fresh mussel treats now and then.

Think the covers you have already built are more than adequate and the cost of those composite covers would pay for an ASHP plus a couple of years worth of electricity to run it!

Admittedly I'd love to be able to afford to heat, but also without heat and the koi being dormant allows me to spend extra time with the family. Would defo cause problems if I neglected the wife and kids all winter as well as summer lol.

That's a LOT cheaper than I'd have thought. What type of heater is it and what gallonage is the pond?

Pretty sure my kettle alone costs more than that a day!

Pond at 9.4C today. Koi appetites now down significantly.
