We’ve had to move into rented and I moved the fish 2.5weeks ago into a pop up pool. Just gone out tonight and gutted to see one of my big guys (over 32”) is upside down and looking very drunk. We’ve had a couple of viscous cold snaps here dropping to -6C or below and 3C plus during day. The hose supplying my drum has frozen to I’ve had to take the plates out to keep the water flow up. My hands were in the water for no more than 2mins and I cannot describe just how cold
the water is but my hand went from cold to painful to no sensation in that short time and I stayed blue for about 20mins once I’d got indoors. I’d say pond temp is around the 0C mark at best.
I’ve seen this happen to old fish I’ve had before and once they get to that point they’ve never survived. Literally nothing I can do to improve the situation. Gutted.

really sorry to hear that mate
we had it fairly mild last year with all the storms pushing through,
but this year is proving to be a lot colder...
other than heating and insulating not a lot i can think of to help....
i wonder if a roll of plastic encapsulated loft insulation would help short term?
only downside is it's useless if wet....Last edited by davethefish1; 18-01-2023 at 11:24 AM.

Im un heated and actually gained a degree last night
I had 3m of pipework that I hadn't insulated so I treated myself to some 13mm rubber pipe insulation, I was out there last night 9 o'clock -1 head torch on ,hands and knees between the fence and the back of the pond like an absolute legend insulating the pipes
The polycarb had a good coating of ice on them so sprinkled a bit of pond salt over them and got the ice off with a broom to let some sun through this morning

As long as these sub zero night temps bugger off I don't mind, might even get the rods out!

Temperature swings definitely the biggest issue where I am over the next week….

South Norfolk
Afternoon all, dry & virtually no wind to speak of, still some negative nights ie below zero, ( last couple of weeks).
Out in the open it’s 7.2°c 72% Rh, & in the shade it’s 5.6°c. Just been up to the Polytunnel, & the koi didn’t come up to greet me? Obviously too cold for food! The pond is sitting @ 6.9°c the tunnel is holding 7.5°c , the Koi all look OK, but grubbing about on,or near the bottom. I must say the colours look very vibrant this time of year!
Winter is still with us, so take care, & be careful
& keep on being Lucky.

7.5 in mine today, the odd bit of laying about on the bottom but mostly fine when I have looked!

A bit worried about a couple of Koi in the pond, don't think they've ever been so cold for so long in their 20+ years
Reading 4.3c yesterday, I set up a 650W heater from my QT into the EZpod and at a cost of £5 elektrix it's now nudging 6c. They look much happier, I just hope outdoor temps are going up enough to allow me to keep the heater on a bit longer without bankrupting me

8.1 now, just added a few crumbed boilies so they can have a mooch about on the bottom which they promptly did.

Pond still just about holding 12°C though it dipped down to 11°C when we had that cold snap.
The fish are active and hungry, always asking for food everytime I walk past the window

Looking good there Dave, you have picked well with all your fish! I'm not really bothered by hi utsuri but yours looks really clean with the sumi! A lot seem to be very bitty but you have a cracking example there
