Had mine on for a month or so now since the temp dropped a bit! Think I am around 18 still although my thermometer is in bits drying out currently as was giving readings of -35 this morning when I stuck it in

Just think, when they do eventually go on, the next thing the fish will see is 6 more mates speaking German in bags above them

For your information, here is the situation in Japan.
In midsummer, the water temperature is kept above 25 degrees Celsius for a period of time, without nets and with the maximum concentration on feeding, their appetite and digestive capacity are maintained even when the water temperature drops.

In other words, in the second half of July, they start to be fed from their normal diet (orange line) with high protein and colour enhancers, even when the water temperature drops to 20įC (red with yellow dots), and in early October, when the water temperature drops below 20įC, they return to normal food.

    mid_autumn.jpg

And how many feeds (green with yellow dots) can we get from October onwards in late autumn? This is the most important period for finishing purposes. If they can be fed as much as possible during this period while maintaining their digestive capacity, they will begin to build up subcutaneous fat and flesh in their backs and tail tubes, giving them the ultimate in health.

This is a subject for another time, but the origin of your KOI Show, HINPYOKAI, takes place mostly in late autumn. This is because we compete with each other for the best finishing techniques and also because the KOI from the mud ponds come back after harvesting and are judged each other.

Pond is winterised, fish still very active and feeding well, when its mild/sunny i have been taking the window cover off to give them some daylight, temp holding well at 16.3C unheated, not put the aquarium heater in yet, holding off until it gets really cold.

Long may this mild weather continue! No covers keeping at 19, happy fish, something going on as usual, but as ever can’t find out what!

Pond down at 12.5c, peeing it down the last two days too, I'm consoling myself with the fact I've just been up in Caithness and it was as usual bloody cold and windy compared to here, my koi must have been some hardy beggars when I lived up there.
