    Winter covers

It's been a great summer with plenty of warm days and nights and I'm sure we've all enjoyed time with our ponds but now the nights are drawing in and the temps are starting to drop its time to start thinking about getting the winter covers out. This will be my first winter running a koi pond so hopefully I've made the right decision in the way I've decided to cover. Pond is currently at 23c and hoping to stay at that for as long as is financially acceptable, hopefully about another 8 weeks or so which will bring us into mid November when I'll slowly drop the temp down to around 16c through the coldest months at the start of 2026. I have decided to not go any lower than around 16c as my pond has only been running since June so I'd like to keep the filters active in the hopes of getting through nps with as little interruption as possible so that my koi can enjoy a long and well fed growing season next year.

Decided to go for a greenhouse type cover as the pond is partially enclosed I only had to cover two sides, when I stuck my head through the feeding hatch this evening there was a noticeable difference between outside and inside temperature.

Looks nice and cosy,I do similar with mine but use polytunnel polythene on a frame to keep the wind chill out.

I did think about trying to use a polytunnel, well some of the framework from a polytunnel so that I could stand inside the enclosure during the colder months but if I put up another structure, albeit temporary I think my better half would probably go nuts
I've ordered some 100mm kingspan to cover the windows when it gets really cold.
on the plus side I can watch the koi through the filterhouse window when its cold/wet as it stays quite cosy in there

If your using a heater of any type that enclosure will pay for itself in no time. Looks pretty smart.

running 9kw thermotec inverter, currently at 23c. hoping to keep it at that for a few more weeks then gradually drop it to around 16 'ish for Jan & Feb, don't really want to any lower as pond is still new I want to keep filters active

    That sounds and looks wonderful!!

I'm trying top move away from my polycarbonate and change to a roll out cover, it's proving difficult so far, having it like yours would be the perfect solution, maybe a thought for next year

Covers are working well, pond currently sitting at 21 with the ashp running around 6 hours every 24 hours or so, koi are loving life, nice and warm and still getting 4 feeds a day, with the lights coming on at 4pm til 10pm its still like summertime for themScreenshot_20251106_102825_Wansview Cloud.jpg

Had to get a dehumidifier though to keep on top of the condensation, got it sitting on the filter house window ledge with the window open overlooking the pond, runs for about 12 hours a night to keep it clear
