Talk to me about koi poo and different foods….
I’ve struggled with fines in my pond for some time.
I feed coppens as it reasonable value and the fish like it. However I’ve noticed today that there’s lots of little poo bits and it’s got me wondering….do some foods give nice solid poos that get taken out by the drum without clouding the water??

This time of year is an awkward one really as they are not long eating a bit again but it's mostly for egg building and cool pond temps (usually!) so they will crap a lot more out until proper summer feeding is underway.
Having said that I did use Coppens one year and found that there was more poo than using stuff like FD/Saki Hikari by a long shot. I also found the top koi stained the water. This time of year tho I always see a lot of poo on the bottom if feeding, it is hard to get the amount right where they are not just crapping it all out!

Must agree , used their food before and found the crap amount considerably more than a higher end food

I’ve just posted on another thread that yesterday I bought some sinking Saki Hikari - they had 3 feeds of it yesterday. This morning the water is so clear with absolutely no signs of poo in suspension (a little on the bottom of the pond - but I haven’t been able to see the bottom that clearly since I built it nearly 2years ago).

It’s unreal - I wouldn’t believe it if I hadn’t seen with my own eyes tbh.
I’ve now taken the experimental air lift with bag out to see how that goes. The interesting thing is, not only has the clarity improved that much but the colour has cleared too (I expected to have to do water changes to gradually get rid of that). Also my drum is now only washing every 60-65mins whereas before it was 10-15mins.
This is in less than two days, NO ADDITIVES, just using high quality food. I will never use coppens again.
