    Another which combi drum question.

4.5k gallon pond, fed by 4” bottom drain and 4” skimmer. In the warmer months I’m feeding 250-350g per day.

    Recommendations on the following…

    QK35 Combi (6week wait) £4.5k delivered
Profidrum 30 CombiBio (available now) £4.6k delivered
    Burtons BD30 Combi (4week wait)£3.6k delivered

I’m interested in knowing what’s the most reliable including customer support. Also what gives the best clarity - I like the look of the Burtons but it has the smallest bio capacity. If any of you have one of the above - what’s the maximum litres of media you’ve got in it and still rolling nicely?

I’ve decided I’m going to put in at least one air lift from the bio chamber, then maybe feed my shower from a pump from the drum (not all of the above offer that ability) or another air lift back to the pond to keep a high drum turn over for clarity.

I've been running a Profidrum for 6 years now. Still all good (touch wood!).
My DIY ponds from 1988 until present day.

Queni qk35, running here for 8 years no issues. Aqua drum 35 has a larger bio chamber though.

I've had an Aquasource Synergy Combi 35 running for a couple of years now - very happy with it.
2,700 Gallon, Infinity Window, Aquasource Synergy 35 Drum, 12Kw Thermotec Invertor, Amalgum UV.

2nd hand draco, must be ancient. Still going.
3070 Gallons. 4" Bottom Drain and Skimmer. Draco Solum 16 Drum. Anoxic Filtration. Air lift returns.

A mixed lot of replies - no definitive answer popping out. The Profi is appealing as it’s available and I know good but I’ve had troubles with Darren before when something went wrong with an additive I bought from him and I lost a lot of fish - I’m really not sure I want to be dealing with him again based on that experience.

The AS synergy is one I have considered but I called a well known dealer who sells them and he recommended 3 filters - none of them being that one - even when I asked him about them he dodged the question and suggested Oase! To me Oase do not make serious filtration for koi ponds of 4500gallons (although I know KWB use them on their ponds -‘I still can’t unsee that they are basically a £4500 water tank with a very small drum.

I really need to make a decision this week…..

Your dealer has a vested interest in something other than what is right for you bud. Aqua source have stood the test of time. I had one myself. I just thought the drum was a bit on the small side If I had ent got a 55/40 profi at the right price I probably would still have it. Like you , I think the oase are toys. Some would disagree

Dave, I would go for a larger drum than you need and dont go by manufacturers specs.

I got the Draco 25,was going for the smaller one but got this one on offer and glad I did, I use it on 3000 gals.

Not saying go for Draco there are loads out there but you have to think of the back up when they go wrong and they will as in everything mechanical.

Thanks all, I’ve just looked at the Aquasource website for instructions - they are the best I’ve seen - very detailed but clear to understand. Benefit being it may just fit in the space I have and can get up to 225litres of media in the bio (it says 450litres of water capacity which infers that as only 50% it would move around really well - most manufacturers apply the two-thirds rule which would suggest 300litres possible).

Without a doubt the spec is the closest to what I’m after and would mean I could run purely on an air lift as wouldn’t need a shower.

What size pond did you have? What is the synergy 35 combi you had? If so did the drum struggle?

Pond is 2200 g. I’ve had the synergy 35 and synergy 35 combi. I do think the drums are small on the synergy but obviously rated at 35000 litres an hour. I have an auga 20000 pump( 20000 means 20000 with those pumps ) and the drum only just kept up when I did flushes etc The profi drum is much bigger But they aren’t cheap

hmm that’s interesting as I haven’t seen one in the flesh - given I have 4500gal in the pond alone and I get a lot of debris from the shrubs and trees (even though it’s netted) I’m guessing the drum will struggle. I thought I’d made a decision….back to being undecided…..

You should be running at around 11000 litres per hour on your pond ( give or take ) so it should be ok

Having spoken to quite a few koi dealers recently I’m now of the understanding that turnover through drum should be whole pond volume every 45mins, but still once every two hours on the fluid bed; main reason is to remove solids as quickly as possible for clarity and to prevent it getting mushed up therefore reducing strain on bio….

Never heard that one bud.Trust me,once every two hours through the drum will give you crystal clear water. My 20k pump is running at 20% so a turnover every 2.5 hours and its gin clear..I will turn the flow up slightly as it warms up but my pump never goes above 35% unless im flushing the bottom drain..Slow and steady wins the race

Another thought - spare parts….a little research shows that spares are readily available for Burtons but can’t find anything for the others - prices seem reasonable for Burtons too.

Oase drums seem as good as any.

Profi drums are now made in Doncaster. Synergy drums are made in Holland ( Mackoi )
