    Sea Gulls

    Morning All,

Has anyone experienced Gulls taking or attacking fish in garden ponds?

We live on the coast about 7 miles east of Dover and although we get loads of the Herring Gulls, (the old tit next door insists on feeding them) we have never noticed them showing anything other than a passing interest in the pond, which is not netted, or the fish.

Never had any problems with seagulls, we do get them where I am as I’m not that far from the coast, The only birds I have had problems with are herons, and I even had a kingfisher once.

Not something you hear about, but gulls will eat nearly anything.
I wouldn't trust them with small koi in a pond.

Not koi related but back in my carp fishing days, as soon as I started catapulting boilies out, they would appear out of nowhere and actually intercept the boilies before they hit the water.

yeah, I know what you mean they’re a bloody pest, I’ve even had them going for the spod bomb as it flies through the air.

We live right on the coast in West Sussex and never had a problem. I do cover the pond with netting in the summer though when I'm not in, which might put them off!

Also have an old dear next door that insists on feeding them daily.......

worse when using a throwing stick at range
you can only sneak one or two in before the whole gang turns up and snatches them out of the air...

Interesting replies, you would think, with their reputation, they would show more interest in the fish. Perhaps they can get more to eat in town, pinching chips & ice cream

Martin 59, a Kingfisher, now that would be a site to see in the garden.

I'm in Dover. I have resident gulls on my roof. They have never taken a fish, certainly over 30cm long, they certainly don't hunt them but my younger fish cower at the bottom of the pond until they get to a certain size. So it's a possibility the gulls are opportunistic, but generally, They are more interested in the fish food which is equally annoying.

...he says whilst sitting in the sun staring at the pond, wondering where the latest Kohaku is...

I lose the biggest two sometimes. Easily 60lb+ worth of carp between the two and neither can be seen, sometimes.
