Thread: Safe to stop feeding

install an auto feeder set for a minimum feed mid afternoon water should be at its warmest then.
they will survive without food ive sometimes stopped December to end of February

I did consider an automatic feeder, but did not like the idea of it dropping food in if the temp drops significantly. I did look to see if there was a "smart" pond feeder available that I could control remotely, but didn't come across anything for ponds, only aquariums. This could have been ideal as I have a camera and aquascape thermometer to remote monitor. I did wonder if I could use a mains connected auto feeder and then control it with a smart plug to some extent? Not sure how well this would work in practice...plus I now have very limited time to experiment. Wish I had thought of all this earlier.

Anyway, it's good to know that they should be OK if I do have to leave them with nothing. Still feel a little uncomfortable doing so though...oh decisions decisions.

That's a very nice setup you have there, pretty ingenious actually.

Thanks for the suggestion of the cat and dog feeders. That might also be an interesting option for the future...didn't consider that.

We have seen your video, and the accumulation of body fat that is common there is definitely not enough in the upper body, but rather unnecessary fat is stored in the chest and lower body, so if you stop feeding, they will lose weight, so you cannot choose to go without feeding for more than six months until spring like we do.

Aim for bulky body shape JUMBO KOIs
Only if the KOIs are able to build up their flesh reserves from the shoulders to the back and tailpipe without being disturbed during the summer feeding period will they not lose weight even if they are not fed at all until spring, as is the case in the old-fashioned way.
