TOSAI or NISAI??
Are they TOSAI?? or NISAI (ake-NISAI) KOI
Isn't that a bit excessive? I asked the Germans many times, but even in October they stubbornly refused to stop calling NISAI KOI as TOSAI.
I have been involved in this for a long time, so I have a resistance to the recent trend.
How is it actually called there now?
This is an example of something that was once common in Japan.
錦鯉の年齢について・The age of Nishikigoi
※I tried to fix the parts that the translation software couldn't handle and changed the year to this year.
Let's say a SHOWA was born on June 12th 2023.
From June 12th 2023 to September, it is called a “SHINKO”.
From September 2023 to December 31st, it is called a “TOSAI”.
And from January 1st 2024 to June 11th 2024, it is called a “AKE-NISAI”.
From June 12th 2024 to December 31st 2024 is the “NISAI”.
From January 1st 2025 to June 11th 2025 is the “AKE-SANISAI” and after that, they increase in the same way.

It's like birthdays. If it's a year old, then it's a year old until it's two years old. No point pondering it further than that.
But there is no zero though is there? So when those terms are used I assume that tosai means first year and Nisai means 2nd year.
So A fish is a tosai until it is a year and a day old, then it's a Nisai.
The trouble we have is 'Jumbo Tosai', some use the term to mean it's a large framed fish with genetic potential to grow big. Some use it to blur the lines between older tosai and early Nisai. But really it's of no consequence if you know when it was spawned.Last edited by Alburglar; 06-10-2024 at 11:49 PM.

Thank you for your views.!!
This is the name of the product that the purchaser has given to create this image, when in fact it is a TOSAI that has been heated in winter for the convenience of the breeders (so that it can be sexed a year earlier) and grown larger, isn't it?

Yes. But the term seems to be used for whatever suits whoever is selling the fish, so it's never reliable.

Recently, in the UK, both hobbyists and dealers have started making their own Jumbo Tosais.
When these success stories are added to the cost of heating and the benefits of sexing during TOSAI, people will understand what JUMBO TOSAI is all about.
